Green Lobophytum - 1 week changes

Hi there,

Just got my second soft coral a nice Green Lobophytum or Devil's hand.

Day 1:

Day 3: Seems to lose some green/blue tone and some parts are turning brown.

Day 7: (picture with Lights off) - I saw a few snails and a crab going on it in the last nights when the lights are off and sneakily munching.. (see red circle).

Do you have any recommendations?

I moved it a bit up and put it in the middle flow. I just changed lights and got Redsea Reefled 50. I am currently running at 40% blue + 10% lights for 11hrs with ramping up/down. Maybe decrease intensity? Can the green/blue pigments come back?

I also have a GSP (Green star polyps) got it the same day which is doing amazing.

What are your parameters? Maybe try increasing light?

I thought the issue was the opposite you mentioned(?) Too strong light and therefore the brown means it's burning(?)

How old is the tank? I would increase the salinity a bit more. Do you know if it came from a high light/high flow? Mine took a few months to open up. It has since flourish and drop a ton of fingers.

Hi!

Tank is 2 months old.

Besides that, when I picked it, it was placed at the bottom of the tank, far from the led, with low flow.

The guy told me that once a while, it shed by covering up of slime and then the flow cleans the slime from it. He also mentioned it drops fingers sometimes. But my main concern is the color pigment. As you see in pic n1, the day 1 was beautiful. Now it’s getting brownish. Can be the light?

It needs good medium-to-high light and high flow. Do you have any powerheads in the tank? It also likes "dirtier" water, and a 2 month old tank might not be providing the nutrients it needs.

I would suggest to use this as a sign that your tank is not ready yet, go slow with corals.

Yes, I have a powerhead which is providing high flow.

But how do you explain that my GSP is doing very well? They are both softies.

Maybe do I need to increase/decrease the intensity of the light?

I am currently running 60% blue / 0% white on a red sea reefled 50.

This could also be rotting, when I had a gorgeous lobophytum that rotted after months of doing well.
Try dipping the coral to see if any pests come off of it.

Ok here's the thing:

The guy at the shop told me:

Dip the GSP
Do not dit the Green Lobophytum because it didn't tolerate the dip-x. He told me to dip it in tap water for 5 second and shake it.

So what now? Should I dip it in dip-x?

Tapwater is likely what is causing it to rot.

IME, most corals do well with Dip-X - However, SPS strip in it. I’d be surprised if this guy doesn’t do well with dip-X so what you can do is lower the concentration and time in the dip to make sure he does well in it.

If you’re concerned about him not doing well I’d go for maybe 7-10 minutes at 0.75ml per 100ml.

Or if you show us how much water you use in the dip I can give a better idea of what I’d use personally.

I actually did in the end 2ml of dip-x per 400ml of seawater for 10 minutes.

I checked the remaining water after the dip and I saw some small creatures swimming (some black and some white). To give you an idea, they were copepod-sized maybe even much smaller, like super tiny dots.

I put the guy back in the tank in a lower position since I've read he needs 150par.

Sounds like it could be a species of flatworm - what pest controlling fish/inverts have you got?

I don't have fish yet because I was waiting the tank to mature a bit.
