Has anyone had to go through several mandarins till they got that perfect one? The first one I had died within 2 days of it being introduced, the 2nd within hours except the 2nd one was shedding a really thick slim coat and barely swimming. Both did eat and both acclimated the same. Parameters were all where they shoild have been and an water change was even done in between each. So just curious if anyone has had to go through several before getting that lucky one.

IMO IME
No. Thats odd. question your fish source. The best fish sources will hold the fish for you. the ususal rules apply on watching to see if its active and happy by observation in the store. The best LFS owners look at fish sales as adoption. And want both parents and new child to be as suited to each other as possible.
If the fish is in a 5x5 cage at the lfs, your not going to get a good result and the fish is gonna be stressed. ETC

I have not had this experience with mandarins. How old is your tank? How big is your tank? What other kinds of fish are living in this tank? What is the condition of the mandarin when they are purchased i.e. (Skinny or fat)? Has the water in your tank been tested?

Tank is a bit more then a year. It's a 125. Have 3 clownfish, cooperband butterfly, lawnmower blenny, blue tang. I would say skinny but I don't think that matters considering they were eating. Tested using red seas kits
