I have two pieces of yellow nephthea that are doing very well. I recently got a piece of green nephthea so I would have both colors in my collection. It started out a very nice green, but as the piece has adapted to my tank and started to grow, it has given up the green and become the same yellow as my other two pieces. Kind of disappoints me, but makes me wonder if yellow is the natural color?

That's interesting Gary and mine has always been green. I'd be happy to supply a piece of my green and see what it does in your system. Maybe your system is too clean or mine is too dirty!

Sara, Yes, as an experiment, I'd like to take a piece from your green colony and see if the same thing happens. I'd be surprised that clean or dirty is the issue. All three of my nephtheas are growing at a nice rate and show very good polyp extension. My guess is that it's more of a lighting issue, which is strange because I would think your lights would deliver better results than mine.

From my experience they look more yellow or green depending on your lighting. For me they are very green under 14k phoenix halides, but another reef club member had reeflux 10k and the exact same nepthea looked more yellow over time.

Mine could be more green based on my lighting then too. Some was under 12K Reeflux, some under 20K radiums and some under some more blue range of t-5's.

One of the major things that takes green away from corals is a lack of iodine. In my SPS tank, if I skip a week of dosing Iodine the corals tend to loose some green and go more yellow. I know this is the case with SPS but I am just speculating that the same thing could happen with softies.

interesting on the iodine, i noticed that my acan colors will fade some, once i add iodine their colors darken up again and look great. I have to add about once a week

The iodine thing is interesting. I've been adding three drops per week of Lugol's solution to that tank, which is a 40 breeder. It has a bunch of leathers and softies. Maybe it needs more? Do those of you who dose iodine use Lugol's or some other iodine. This tank also gets a 10 gal. water change weekly.

My nephthea are under four T5 lamps in a 40 breeder, so they're getting plenty of light.

I dose 10 drops weekly right after my 25 gallon water change on my 150 gallon system. My 90 is all SPS and my 40br is all zoas and acans, both are connected to the same system with a 30 gallon sump. I know the leathers would use up more iodine than SPS would.

I use Kent Lugols Iodine.
