4 or 5 years ago my LFS gave me a tiny green thing that came in as a hitchhiker on a coral order. He didn't know what it was, but thought that it might be an anemone of some sort.

The creature lived in my 3G pico for a couple of years, then spent a year of so in a 10 gallon. During the whole time, it never got larger than a dime.

A year ago, I decided to consolidate all of my tanks into a single 120. Since that time, the green beast from the deep has multiplied and is now in 3 different locations in the tank. In addition, when they are fully expanded, some of them are 2 1/2" in diameter.

They have a foot/stalk that is only exposed when hit with very high flow. Usually they hug the rocks.

I never really have them much thought and just enjoyed their looks and colour. Now my curiosity has gotten the better of me and I'd really like to know what they might be. Perhaps they are an anemone, but they also look like they might be a form of giant paly.

Thoughts anyone?

Oh yeah, pretend you don't see the aiptasia. :p

I think your right it's a type of anemone. Cool looking. Google "Anthozoa" and look at images

By George, I think you've got it!

Looks like it is probably an Anthopleura xanthogrammica. There is a similar one called A. sola, but I think that the former is more likely.

Thanks!
