I have an algae bloom and have had my skimmer not functioning for a couple of months, along with slightly elevated nitrate levels and maybe too much light, I don't know how to rid the algae unless I take out all the rocks and scrape them in water change water. Could this be phytoplankton or other micro algae? Any thoughts?

Literally had the same thing happen this past week... I'm not sure what it was, I assumed an algae/phyto bloom of some sort.. but I just upped my water changes a bit and it worked it's self out. Hope you have similar luck!

This is how bad my bloom is, I'm going to try to get ontop of it in the coming week by taking out all the rocks and scraping them in the water from change, do a good syphon of the sand, clean everything. Put it all back together, stay ontop of nitrates and phosphates, apart from that idk what else to do...uv, refugium...both. I'm not sure.

Others may disagree with me, but I don't consider that a 'bloom' as much as a total algae infestation :D

Depending on what fish/coral you have that's alive in there, it may not be the worst idea to do a reboot along the lines of what you are saying.

If you don't have corals, I'd try turning down your lights for a while after you get it cleaned up. Get some pods and get some fish that'll snack on the algae to get in front of it. Good luck!
