I picked up new lights and did a 50/50 water change...

After my water change, this happened.

I think it's a diatom spread... And it's getting worst. I picked up 2 snails to help out, but it doesn't look good. Is it my lights? Or do to my 50% water change?

How old is your set up? The rocks don't look like they have much coraine on them (and likely not all the bacteria and othe microscopic life that is indicative of a new tank and keep algae off.

nuisance algae, cyano, diatoms are typical in new tanks.

Are you using RODI water? If not, you might be adding nutrients into your tank that will feed diatoms.

as for coral colors, one big difference between budget LEDS reef lights and high end LEDS is the the higher end tend to rely a lot less on white LEDs creating daylight by mixing blue red green and some violet. Think of lights serving 3 roles. One is to provide the energy for the zooxanthellae to perform photosynthesis. White LEDs certainly can do this. The second is the spectrums that trigger the corals defense mechanism to reflect harmful rays which provide color. Then the third is the light that we see. White/Daylight is not a color - it's a blend of colors. this is a perfectly healthy coral can appear brown in one tank and then be fluorescent in another. You might not think it's healthy in that first tanka and then think it's doing great in the other when in fact the only think that changed is what light reached our eyes.

diatoms could vert well be a result of the lights . but if you light are making your coral happy, IMO, focus on keeping good water parameters for your corals and proving an environment where your corals and microfauna out compete the nuisance stuff.

GSP can come in all different shades. I have some GSP (on the left) that came on some live rock that has very little color except under blue lights. It came on some live rock and was completely gone at one point but has returned. :D

The GSP on the right is more of a toxic green under blue lights. It started as a quarter size frag for $5. It does spread fast. ;Nailbiting

This picture is under white lights.

Beautiful... Love it natural. I would love to see more under different lighting if you can. Great job! Cheers!

I’d be careful with green stars. I had some and it spread like bad weed in my tank to the point it was annoying. No more GSP touching the est of my rocks again lol
Lol. So far it's growing slow.. my Kenya on the other hand, is growing fast and stinging everything... That's why I placed her in the corner. She was being naughty. Lol

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. All I have at work.

This is a Biocube with a CF White, CF Actinic, and then all LED slots filled with blue LED's. I believe these photos are taken with the actinic and led's, no white.

@ NS Mike D: Yes, I picked up distilled water... As soon as that jug is empty, I'll take it to my LFS for RODI water. Thanks again, dude.

Only distilled water. When it's done, I'll fill it with rodi
Ok, guys... I picked up the RODI water from my LFS for .50 cents a gallon. This is 3 days after the RODI water change (20%).

I'm also thinking of getting another tank, maybe a 3.7 or 5 gallon cube. More room for aquascaping a better looking tank and would make the new addition (peppermint shrimp) happy.
