The LFS gave me a nice piece of Green Star Polyp for my tank yesterday. It is finally starting to emerge but is appears to be curled up like a piece of chewing gum. I don't see any of the purple bottom. Should I try to manually open it up flat or will it do that on its own? It is laying on polyps and I don't want them to die.

Thanks!

You can try to open them, but they will come out on they're own. Can we see a picture?

Was the mat flat when you bought them?

I have a type of green star polyp that does that. It forms a curl that becomes a hollow tube and forms a branch. Not all green star polyp I've seen does this, most just form a mat over rock. It will also mat your rock but it does form these branches, which I and many feel is pretty cool!

It was flat like a carpet when he was at the FS. It balled up when he was put in the bag and then I dipped him for about 15 min. All parameters are looking great.

Can I unroll it without causing it harm? I want it to lay flat on the sand bed or a smaller piece of rock that would be perfect for it.

Yes you can unroll it be careful not to apply to much pressure.
It may not stay rolled out on top of the sand.
These guys can be temperamental if handled to much.

Ok. Do I need to glue it to the rock or rubber band it if I go that route? Thank you all!

Never been a fan of rubber bands. They degrade before they get settled in to start growing.
I would take a piece of rock chisel a side flat and place it in the sand so it looks like it is on the sand and not a rock.
Eventually it will start to grow out

Here is the GSP I'm talking about, it's attached to the back wall of my 29 biocube. It started as the stalk you see sticking off the wall which I glued the stalk was clipped off from another tank.

Nice do you have a front tank shot?

It's a nice little piece. I like the color, I also like how your clowns kinda snuck in the back for the photo :)
