Green star polyps only opening when direct sun is on it

Hi All,

I am very new to the hobby (8 months) and I have a question about my Green Star Polyps.
I currently have a current marine orbit pro as my light set up (no glass top nor any kind of cover). here is the model:

My colony polyps are high on the rock (about 10 inches away from the light) and they are doing great.
However, my GSP only opens when direct sun comes on them (I have the sunrays coming on them for about one hour at 8/9am in the morning). Once the sunrays are gone, they close within 20/30mn. I tried a couple of different set up with the light with more blue, less white etc but nothing changes. The GSP are placed about 20 inches below the light in the corner and look like they receive plenty of light.
Not sure what to do as I read in many forums that the GSP are super easy to take care of but mine looks like they only enjoy the real sun...!
I bought the light fixture on September 24th 2017
Tank: 45G
Canister filter that I clean once a month
Water change with RODI water every 2 weeks (40%)
One powerhead
Skimmer

My parameters:
Phosphate: 0.05
Nitrate: 0
Ammonia: 0
Salinity: 1.025
Temp: 77F
Not sure about Ca and Alk

Welcome to R2R! I'm not sure why they would be acting that way. Would you be able to post a picture of your tank and the gsp?

Move them up and give them more light, wait a week or so and see if they stay open all day.

I had the same light. I believe it only produces 24 watts. Based on your tank size of 45 gallons, this is less than 2 watts per gallon. So if sticking with that light, you will have to move you corals around until you find that sweet spot for the coral in question.

I recently upgraded to their LOOP system, which is an upgraded version of your light (I believe your light has been discontinued). The nice thing about the LOOP is that it allows you to add additional lighting into the same controller.

The light comes in at about 27 watts and also offers more than just the white and blue LED available on your light.

When I started out with your light, I shopped for a second light just like it to increase the power and reach of the lighting in my tank. But after researching, I found that the upgrade to the newer light and adding a second was the best long-term solution.
