I have started to fill my 90 gal (green water) and 40 gal breeder (clear water). I am using used sand that has been rinsed.......... I am almost done filling the main tank (waiting for another hose adaptor, my plastic broke on my ro di unit) But the water is green in the 90. What can I do about it? It's more than likely from the sand I'm assuming........ is there a way to fix it without replacing the sand?

Thanks

Definitely not the glass.

To me it just looks like organics floating in the water. Even with rinsed sand this happens when the sand is disturbed. Give is a few hours and it should settle out.

One of the times a canister filter comes in handy... to scrub that water while its still stirred up. Sure it will settle but cleaning is better so you don't have nutrient issues from the git go. No canister then just get it pumping and use socks and/or sponges, pads etc. to scrub the water. I would do that for at least a few days and keep stirring it up until water is pretty clear and then add some sort of cycling bacteria.

Once I get it full and running. Can I put something in the sump to do the?

Thanks

Heh I thought looking at that second pic, "that's an awesome background!" Then I realized the picture is turned.. :D

It'll settle out itself, if you have filter socks that would assist too. Probably just organics like someone mentioned.

Can I still put shrimp in to start the cycle while I'm trying to ckean the water?

Are you using dry rock and sand? If you are not then I would allow the live rock and live sand do the cycling. Shrimp and extra bacteria sources are NOT need to cycle the tank with live rock. Big misconception among people in this hobby.

No live rock. Just re used rinsed sand and dry rock. :)

Ok then yes I would add some type of bacteria (shrimp, bottle bacteria, food) to initiate the cycle.

I'm on the same boat. Added bottle bacteria and on day 5 on my 90 gallon

tank. Dry rock and dry sand.
