Hello, I'm new to saltwater. Not new to the hobby as a whole. I've had tanks over the years and decided I wanted back in after a break. I've had everything from bettas to a 220 full of African cichlids. I'm starting with a 40 gallon breeder with a 20 high sump, some older Chinese d120 black boxes, a dcq-6000 return pump, a diy glass overflow so far. I'm up in the air for a skimmer, I have a few options in mind. Either a coral box d300, an eshopps axium x-120, or a skimz sm121. I haven't nailed down what powerheads I want yet. I'm leaning toward getting 20 or so lbs of live rock from either tampabaysaltwater or gulfliverock and filling in with dry rock for the rest. I'm still reading and learning. I'm probably not going to go into sps, I'm leaning more towards zoa's and maybe a few lps. Here are a few photos of where I'm at right now.

Welcome to R2R!
You say you're not going to SPS, but I am sure you can be, persuaded, to the dark side ;)
Maybe after a bit more experience, once I can nail my parameters down and keep them stable for a while, and learn more about dosing and things like that. And most definitely AFTER I invest in a battery backup. Cause gulf coast. Hurricanes love us just slightly less than Florida.

If you ever decided to go for it, as you said, have your parameters good. While SPS aren't all the hard corals they're claimed to be, they're no GSP.

Hello from your neighbor to the west. I am tempted to ask if you are planning to keep any drum in the tank. I see in the first picture you already have some tiny ones
Nah. Those drums are for a kiddo. The other drum down here are for eatin. Catch them in places like this.
