Been posting and looking around here for a few weeks now. I kinda like the place, and decided it was time to do a bit about my tank.

I started my first 'reef' tank circa 1982. Trying to follow what I was reading of the 'Berlin method' systems at the library (yeah, I'm old). Shut down a 220 in wall reef in '04, due to several factors, family business left me with little time to maintain it, lack of maintenance led to dramatic losses, loss of interest kept me from trying to save it. Sold it all off. Out of reefing for over a decade.

Set up this 60g Marineland cube July 2015. I'll never have another tank bigger than 125 or so. Maintenance on a large system contributed heavily to driving me out of the hobby.

So... Tank going well, though growth rates were a bit slow, headed into Christmas 2016. Bought myself a halide setup to replace the Aquaticlife Halo I was using, and while waiting on that to arrive, I did _something_. Not sure I'll ever identify exactly what. I suspect I put hands coated in gun cleaning chemicals into the tank, but, whatever the cause, the result was near total wipeout. All my corals except one small Acan frag and a single head of a branching hammer, a deresa clam, and 4 fish. All Gone.

I've spent the last couple of months doing dramatic water changes, running carbon, cleaning _everything_ thoroughly... added a small frag of pocillipora just over a week back, seems to be holding it's own. So, I'm about to start rebuilding the reef, but not changing any hardware. I did hang my new light, but that's all that's changing.

So, free standing system, view-able 'in the round', so to speak. Some key features, starting at the top:

  • Hamilton Bimini Sun -w- 250w DE 14,000k bulb
  • BRS screen top -w- eggcrate cut around mounts
  • Maxspect Gyre 130
  • 4" oolitic DSB Controversial these days, but I'm a believer
  • Stock overflow converted to Herbie -w- External return
  • Mosaic tile surround, the work of my daughter, Kaitlyn.
  • Custom Stand designed to give me a little elbow room in a compact system
  • Eshopps RS100 Sump
  • Reef Octopus SRO1000SSS
  • BRS Mini reactor - Carbon GFO mix
  • Tunze ATO -w- Tunze inline Kalkwasser doser, Eshopps ATO Reservoir
  • Iwaki return pump

Excuse the mess, I added the BRS mini reactor after my recent crash, and haven't yet cleaned up the mess I made with the electric and plumbing. I'll get there, eventually.

Anyway, if anyone has any specific questions about any of the gear I'm using, I'd be happy to expand (or expound, anyway). Nice place you have here ;)

So... update...

I'm in the process of disassembling this system. Ordered a 60x30x18 140g from Planet Aquariums the other day. Will be set up peninsula style, in the same location as the cube.

Why... I miss having tangs, smaller angels, and other fish too large for this cube. After the crash I experienced, I was basically left without livestock... I've got 4 small fish and 6 small coral frags. Seemed a good time, if I was going to change out the tank, to go ahead and do it.

For other Springfield MO area folks, this system is going up for sale soon.

Marineland 60g cube, modified to herbie style drain -w- external return. Custom oversized stand w mosaic tile. 3 month old Hamilton Bimini Sun 250w DE halide -w- electronic ballast. EShopps RS100 sump (6 months old). Japanese Iwaki MD40RT return pump -w- 2x union ball valves. BRS Mini Reactor. Complete system. Only thing I'm taking out of this system is the ATO setup, skimmer, and the sand/rock/livestock. Excellent condition. $600 Local pick up only.

oh! I was just looking at it and saying it looks like a good start -- But as a fellow sufferer of TAS (Tank Acquisition Syndrome), and appreciator of shallow reefs -- I heavily support your new tank as well.

It was a good start. Had it going very well, though growth was slow. I bought myself a 250w halide pendant for Christmas, and before I could even install it, I had a wipeout. Pretty sure I stuck my grubby hands in the tank with gun cleaning chemicals on them, killed a bubble tip anemone, and with the family gone for a few days over the holiday, it took out the tank.

During the rebuilding process, I decided I needed something a bit larger, and this was a prime opportunity.

It'll make someone a nice tank. At the moment, it's sort of languishing... as I prepare to empty it.

Hello - I love your 60 gallon cube, about to start one myself...but can not find the original build thread - can you post the link again?

Sure. Happy to. Unfortunately, I have to link to a different forum... I wasn't on here when I started that tank.

I shut this tank down about a year ago. Sold it to a local guy, nearly complete, who is still using it, very much in it's original configuration. Holding up well, so far.

I went to a larger tank... about 140g. Fat, and low. That build thread is here.

Enjoy.

Cool - thank you so much. I love the design of your stand, with the four corners & plywood. Unfortunately my daughter is 9 so she will not be helping with the tile work.

About to start the build - Living in the South East, I am going to use Southern Yellow Pine as the corners...taking two 2x4 and making a 3" square for each corner. Then using plywood for the sides.
