Greybeard's Wide, Shallow Peninsula

Greybeard,
The Virbant did knock out my BA.

Now, I just dose it once a month to keep the live rock pores clean.

Freddie
Glad it worked for you. I'll never put the stuff in my tank again. Got a friend that has a predator tank, he wants to try, see if it'll clean his tank up. No corals in there to hurt :)

Greybeard,
I don't blame you.
It is wicked and it sure can effect corals.

Thanks for letting me chime in... :) and you have an wonderful reef... ;Singing ;Singing ;Singing

14 pages of good reading! Once I saw Planet Aquarium 60x30x18 peninsula I had to read it all. I’m in the process of setting up the exact same tank. Beautiful set up, I love all the equipment is behind the tank and wish I could do that. Wonder if the wife would notice a new closet in our bedroom? She might actually like it until she couldn’t put her shoes in it!

Looking forward to more updates and pictures.

My Hero :)

This guy, and his little friend, have virtually eradicated bubble algae from my reef.

Had a fairly severe case, fast growing bubble algae. Tried Vibrant, which is why you see some cyano in that photo still... Didn't work, corals (especially hamers) looked BAD. Discontinued, picked up two small emerald crabs, yanked the biggest piece of rock and used a power washer to remove all traces of bubble algae (or anything else) from the rock.

One of the two emeralds molted into a hairy legged monster. Shell is nearing 2" across. Amazing how fast these critters can grow.

System update...

Tank running well... I've recently had some problems with my orange spotted rabbitfish. My wife told me she'd seen him taking bites out of my smaller wall hammer. I didn't take her word for it... small wall hammer is gone, larger wall hammer is half dead, and I watched the darned thing kill my 4" derasa clam. Picked up a few extra nets over the weekend, I'll get him caught this week, trade him back to my LFS on Saturday. Shame, really... beautiful fish, fat and happy, I'm going to miss him.

Likely replace him with a foxface, eventually.

Still dealing with some bubble algae. Not a huge problem, but a bit of a nuisance. I've been slowly extending my refugeum light duration, with hopes that the ref will start to out compete the bubble algae.

On that note: I changed out my cheap 2x 24" T5 ref light for a Zetlight E200s a few months back. I must say, I'm quite happy with the zetlight. Solid product, performs well, I've got no complaints at this point. Just before making that change, I'd pulled out all of the C. Mexicana that I had, and added a good ball of Chaetomorpha. Or... at least, I _thought_ I'd pulled all of the Caulurpa. It's back... and growing well. The chaeto is doing well too... so far. As long as I keep the C. Mexicana trimmed back, it'll probably be fine. I have no doubt as to which would take over, given the chance. That caulerpa is some determined stuff.

Picked up a handful of zoa frags at SLASH's 'Corals and Cold One's' event a month or so back. Just a bunch of random zoas. The few zoa colonies I've got are growing like gangbusters... figured it was a good time to add some. So far, so good... haven't lost any frags, but they've not exploded yet, either. Here's hoping :)

AWC: I'm planning to grab a Neptune DOS at BRS's Black Friday sale this year. All the other preparations are done for my automatic water change system. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out.

After black Friday update:

Picked up a DOS pump, and set up Auto Water Changes. Beginning today. I've been doing 10% (15 gallon) changes every 2 weeks... so I set the AWC system up to do 1 gallon a day... Should be _about_ the same change rate as I've been doing. We'll see how it works out.

Also picked up a Tunze solenoid valve. I've had two 110VAC solenoid valves fail on me in a year. One from BRS, one from AirWaterIce. Both just quit closing. With the float valve in my ATO reservoir, it never caused a problem... but relying on what should be an unused safety all the time is hardly what I had intended. So... I've plumbed my ATO to use the solenoid directly, and routed the outlet through another float valve that will stop the flow if the water level in my sump rises an inch or so above normal. Pulled the reservoir completely, disconnected the high/low sensors and unplugged the 110vac solenoid. So far so good.... we'll see how it lasts.

And now the bad...

I've got a horrible case of bubble algae. Brought it in probably 6 months ago on a frag plug. It's in _all_ of my rocks, and popping up on plumbing, in my sump... stuff's a menace. I've got 3 big emerald crabs... had an orange spotted rabbitfish that loved the stuff. Unfortunately, he also loved my hammer corals, so he's gone, but he wasn't keeping up with it anyway.

Measurable nutrient levels are where I want them... Nitrate and Phosphate just barely detectable. Corals and fishes are happy and healthy... but so is the bubble algae.

I'm _seriously_ considering a reboot. Pull my fishes and inverts, put 'em in a temporary tank (a 40g with a HOB filter would be big enough...) . Harvest corals from their substrate so that I'm not bringing bubble algae with me... and nuke the tank. Throw out the rock and sand, and run bleach for a few days. Just start the whole thing over.

Maybe I'll go with Tampa Bay cultured rock this time... see what that gets me (aside from gorilla crabs!).

I may do a lights out period first... see if I can kill the bubble algae that way, but I'm expecting that a long enough dark period to kill my bubble algae is going to take my corals along with it...

Hmpf.

I had a terrible bubble algae problem in a 30 cube once. I wasn't running a fuge. I added a 20 high aquarium as a fuge next to the tank and ran a 175watt 6500K MH on it. Between an emerald crab and the fuge the BA was gone in a month. Saved me from tearing down the tank. I will say that I was harvesting lettuce, calerpa and chaeto every 4 days until the BA collapsed then I took the fuge offline and just did a small one in the sump.

I am running a fuge... approx. 25 gallons, with a ZetLight refugeum LED over it... Calurpa Mexicana and Chaetomorpha both growing well.

Halides? I've got a 250w halide setting around, but my sump closet couldn't handle the heat. No chance of that.

Sorry to read this. :(

Eh :)

The only thing I'm 'sorry' about is how 'sorry' my tank is looking. Equipment wise, configuration, hardware... I'm still _VERY_ happy with this system. It's _not_ going to change substantially... and certainly not going to be broken down and sold off.

Since day 1, I've struggled with SPS in this system... my intended goal. Just never really happy. Ok, fine... tank is more happy with softies, well, I like softies just fine, I'll change my goal. Softies are doing great... but this bubble algae is annoying as heck.

IMHO, nothing wrong with a reboot.

Looking at the cost of a hundred pounds of farmed live rock and new sand... I'm starting to develop another plan. My ref, while healthy, has never been particularly productive. I may pick up a Kessel H380, extend the ref photo period a bit, and cut back the main system photo period. See if I can 'out compete' that bubble algae.

Good call.

No, there is nothing wrong with a reboot. Blooming in slack was how I was raised.

Keep us posted, buddy!

I would add at least 6 new mithrax / emerald crabs, mine are always best at bubble algae when they first go in. ;)

Grey beard just read through the entire thread. Really impressive build. How about an update? Have you defeated the bubble algae at this point?
Glad you enjoyed the thread ;)

I'm still dealing with the bubble algae, but I'm winning the battle.

Limiting light in the display and extending 'day' in the refugeum is working. Bubble algae went from dense, dark, and hard bubbles to softer, lighter colored, and at this point, I'm probably looking at a 50% decrease in bubble algae coverage.

Picked up a pencil urchin, he doesn't seem to like the bubble algae. Got a tuxedo urchin on the way, but I'm not really expecting him to do much for the algae problem either.

Oh... one side benefit, I haven't scraped the glass on my tank in a month. Just doesn't need it. A 5 hour 'day' seems to be enough to keep my corals healthy, I'm experiencing some growth, even.

AWC: Anyone who is looking into automatic water changes, let me offer this piece of advise: Do it. Stability is key, and an AWC system, IHMO, goes a long way in keeping things stable. Love it.

Plan from here is to continue shortened day until bubble algae is gone. I may add a half dozen small emerald crabs, just to assist in the effort. I'll re-evaluate in a few months.

Glad you are winning the battle against the bubble algae. I too run AWC using a litermeter 3 pump and I'll never go back to anything else.

Mine uses a DOS pump.

One thing that just about burned me with the AWC system: Keep an eye on salinity. I have an open 50g NSW reservoir, lasts about a month. Over the course of a month, the salinity in this reservoir got way high, due to evaporation. Raised tank salinity to 1.029 by the time I'd noticed. I'm so used to my ATO system keeping rock solid salinity, it's not something I'm used to checking. Obviously, I slowly bumped the salinity back down to where it belongs, and now I check salinity in my NSW reservoir every week, adjusting with a bit of fresh RO/DI as needed.

Just something to be aware of!

I use a 55 gallon barrel but its closed so there is no evaporation. I then monitor salinity with the GHL Profilux, and every 6 or so weeks I check it manually to be sure everything is still calibrated. This setup worked well for me for 8 months or so until I recently had a leak and had to drain my tank. I'm rebuilding everything now but I will definitely continue with this rock solid setup. A few other things to consider - i have a low water shut off switch in the 55 gallon barrel. This prevents my pump from draining water if the reservoir is empty. I also have a high water sensor in the sump.If this is triggered the GHL can turn off ATO and AWC systems.

Update :)

1st, I put in the DOS based AWC system. There's another thread here:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/a-week-in-with-a-neptune-dos-pump.518447/

That discusses it in detail, but IMHO, AWC's may be the best new thing to come along in reefing in many years. Check 'em out.

So... because of the AWC system, I've disabled my dosing system. Just don't need it. I'll wait and see, as corals grow in, I may need it again, but for now, I just shut it off. I've also left my GAC reactor off. Used to need it periodically, don't anymore.

ATO system: I had a Tunze. Nice system, I'd highly recommend it, but I've had some issues. DIY Auto Fill system on my ATO Reservoir was causing me problems, so I bought the Tunze Solenoid, and went direct to my RO/DI system, eliminating the reservoir and the auto fill system. Problem is, my well output is low, and depending on what other people are doing around the house, sometimes it's WAY slow. This caused the Tunze system to timeout, waiting to fill, if someone was in the shower, or if we were adding water to the hot tub, whatever. When it times out, it disables itself... and because I can't hear the alarm in the closet, I won't know about it until the return pump starts sucking air.

So... I went old school. Put a float valve in my sump, ran that to my RO/DI system, and put an alarm on the high level sensor in my sump. So... WHEN the float valve fails, and yeah, it will... I'll get an email alarm saying that the sump is high. Since I work at home, and am rarely elsewhere, I figure that's 'good enough'. I was going to put a solinoid into this as well... and still might, but I've not had much luck with them for long term reliability.

On to the big one: Bubble Algae.

Over several weeks last fall, I was slowly increasing intensity and duration of my refugeum lighting (still running the Zetlight E200S), while at the same time, decreasing lighting in my display. Currently, I'm running 15 hours at 100% in my ref, and my tank lighting is never more than 4 bulbs at a time, mostly blue for 2 hours, mostly white for 4 hours, with a total 'day' of only 6 hours.

Corals are tolerating the short day well. My hammer never looked so good, zoanthids, palys, softies... all are doing very well. The only real SPS I have, some monti caps, are not doing so well at this short day, but those are free frags from a friend, and there's lots more where it came from. If I need to, I'll re-start the colony after I've increased the photo period.

Anyway, my bubble algae coverage, I once would have estimated 75% coverage of exposed rock throughout the tank, is COMPLETELY GONE on one of the two 'islands' of rock, and somewhere around 30% left on the 2nd island. What is there is not healthy looking, some of it even going transparent. My ref, on the other hand, is growing very well. I've not had to actually harvest any macro algae yet, but I've gone from a 5" ball of chaeto to half of my 12 x 12 x 28" ref full. Oh, and the C. Mexicana that I thought I'd eradicated has come back... several healthy looking fronds of it growing through the chaeto ball.

In short... I'M WINNING this battle. Never had any doubt... well, almost :D

Once I've eliminated the bubble algae, I'll start lengthening the tank photo period SLOWLY. Then, perhaps, I'll put a few monitporas back in, and probably get back into some clams :)
