Grill Necessary?

I modified my Bashsea Biofuge so I can fit two return pumps in the return chamber. Well, as long as the grills/input guards are removed. Will this be a problem? If so, is there some sort of alternative screening I can affix to the intake of the pumps? Thanks.

Would just be concerned of something getting into the pumps and screwing them up. But would take a lot to make it all the way to the return chamber. Otherwise should be fine.
