Growing corals upside down?

This is not something I necessarily want to tackle on my own, just a curiosity, but has anyone ever heard of an upside down reef tank? One in which the lights are mounted in the sump facing upwards and all the frag plugs are upside down? Not sure how feasible this is but I am currently setting my tank back up and seeing the sump lights shine up into the tank got me wondering if it had ever been done with any success.

Following, because that would be EPIC. Perhaps utilize some "floating islands" looks via the rockwork attaching to the back glass?
