I have a newish (7 month old) 100 gallon FOWLER tank and need some advice with some growth issues. The tank underwent a cyno outbreak and then a nastier red slime outbreak. The red slime was tougher to get rid of but I finally cleaned it up mostly with the aid of red slime remover. Now I have another rust colored algae growing. It’s possible it’s also red slime but it looks and acts a bit different. It’s mostly in this one area of the tank (see pictures) but is also in about 2 dozen dime size places elsewhere. In the morning, the patch is almost completely gone. I’m assuming it’s mostly due to my Tiger Cowrie whom I’ve seen mowing over it. It’s also possible it’s just due to lack of light. The first picture is the first thing in the morning and the second picture is after the lights have been on for about 8 hours. (ps. I cleaned the back wall between pictures)

I’m pretty sure I can somewhat easily erradicate this completely by blacking out for 2 or 3 days. But it’s somewhat under control and if my Cowrie is eating it then I’m on the fence about removing it. But I know how difficult it can be to get rid of nuisance growth if it takes over so if I need to get rid of it I should do it now.

It still appears to be cyano to me.

Thanks. It's definitely looking and behaving differently from the other red slime I had. Nothing I did to previous slime would touch it until the red slime remover. This one seems much more controllable by simply eliminating light. Plus I don't think my cowrie or snails were interested in the previous batch at all. Maybe it's just because there's a lot less than before that it's manageable.

Might be time for another 3 blackout to finish eradicating this stuff. I really don't want to use the red slime remover again. It worked but it took a lot of hands on with my skimmer, socks, etc. and I really don't like adding chemicals if I don't need to.

Mine went away when I quit trying to dose chemicals, and stopped adding fish for a while. Stuff loves nitrate.

Funny, I'm probably one of the few with this not looking for help on how to get rid of it. Just trying to figure out if I should get rid of it. Now the first batch - definitely needed help getting rid of that!
