I have had this GSP frag for around a month now and it has been doing really well and growing fast. It has been closed for two days now, and it closed after I didn't top off my tank for a day. The salinity went from 1.025-1.026. My mag also went from 1400-1315 over the course of two weeks. I also feed Phyto twice a week. I've heard it normal for them to close after they grow a lot, or because of the salinity swing. My xenia is fine, and my leather frag is fine other than the fact that it sheds every week. I'm doing. a water change to. bring my mag back up to level tomorrow.

Here are my parameters:
salinity: 1.025 had a recent swing to 1.026 after my ato run out.
Ammonia nitrie: 0 (constant)
phosphate: .05 (constant)
Nitrate: .10 (constant)
Calcium: 380 (constant)
Magnesium: 1315 (swing from 1400 over the course of two week)
Ph: 8.1 (constant)
Kh: 7.5 (constant)

I would take a close look at it and make sure it does not have any algae growing over it or anything else on it as that will make them close up.a swing of .001 on salinity and a slight swing of mag over two weeks will not bother a GSP. They are extremely hardy and you really have to try hard in order to kill them. It seem like something may be irritating it. I would also do your water change and recheck your parameters. KH and Cal is a bit low so i am sure your other corals would appreciate getting those up a bit.

I’ll keep an eye on it. It was looking really good prior to it closing up.

I had this happen to one of mine, I think it was some GHA on it. I did a peroxide dip which took care of that, and now its looking good again.

I'm not seeing anything at the moment but ill keep a close eye on it.

So I’m not sure if it’s algae but their does seem to be a small piece layer of films from it. I thinks it’s algae beginning to grow. How can I get rid of it? Turkey baster or toothbrush.

I have a GSP colony (rock covered with it) and it sometimes closes for a week or more for no apparent reason. I have a shrimp that likes to bother it, but usually it opens up pretty quickly after that. GSP is very hardy and has always recovered if I just leave it alone.

The problem is I think mine has some algae irritating it. Anyway I can help it.

Someone mentioned above, you could dip it in a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide to kill the algae. Or a dose of something like Vibrant in the frag tank might help too. I wouldn't use a toothbrush to scrub it though as you might knock it off the plug. Do you have any CUC that might clean it for you?

I have hermits and snails I could place them next to it. It’s not in a frag tank, and it has spread off the plug and onto the whole rock so I would have to dip the whole rock.
