Quick question for everyone ... and this may seem like a silly question, but ...
Can GSP grow upside down ?
The reason for asking is this... I really like the way it looks but have always steered clear of it, out of fear of it spreading everywhere. I have read several times about isolating it to its own island, and I got to thinking ... (yeah, dangerous, I know lol) If I cut a 4x4 piece of 1/4" plastic, and mounted a (roughly) 4 inch long piece of 1/2" acrylic rod to it, and then mounted a piece of live rock to the top of that, it should clear the sand bed by a good couple inches. In my head, the only worry I should have then, would be if the GSP can grow upside down, and out of the light.

No I am pretty sure it could not because it is a photosynthetic coral therefore it needs light to produce energy

That sounds like a plan, at least in theory. However, I suspect the GPS will grow tentacles in its mat as it seeks new real estate. That is what mine has done. Here's a pic of my GSP after lights out. You can clearly see the mat tentacle growing out on the right side.

I’ve had GSP grow on all sides of rock, including underneath the shaded side away from my lights.

Thank you both for replying, and the info !!
I have not had a chance to try this out yet, myself. I know there are tons of people who throw this stuff away every day, and I am just waiting to find someone who is doing that, vs spending $30 plus shipping for some "neon/electric shimrin special fancy name" GSP.

Reach out to your local reefers. Probably someone willing to part with a GSP frag for way cheap.

the tentacles are differently a thing but easy to cut off and make frags if you want to share the GSP love with others.

Ive also had some grow under rocks and the polyps reach out from underneath towards the light.

It will definitely grow on the underside of a rock. I once had some isolated on a rock in my sandbed and the gsp grew underneath the sand and was reaching toward a close by rock. I got rid of that frag due to it being the less popular variety that wasn’t too bright and was all green.

There is a local frag swap coming up at the beginning of April, in Indianapolis. I'm hoping to pick up some from there

Looks like I will just have to do some periodic pruning, just like everyone else, lol.

I have some GSP growing on the side and underside of a rock, but being primarily in the shade I wouldn't exactly describe it as "thriving". Not like the half dozen other GSP colonies on the sandbed.
Good to know ! Thank you !
