Hello I have a green star colony and for about a year it was gorgeous. Then one day started not opening all the way just a little. No algae on it at all. All perimeters are on the money. I did not change anything. Same light same tank and filter. It just freaked out. Please help it's giving me panic attacks.

Water flow is essential for their thriving as is presence of some nitrates and proper salinity 1.024-1.025

I was putting in Kent A and B nano supplements then I ran out and never replenished my supply. Do you think that could have done it? I ran out about the same time the GSP started this.

I believe more of a coincidence
Take a turkey baster and give the GSP gentle burst. You may see powdery looking substance coming off of them which is known as mulm. Will perk them up

Do you have any animals in tank that might be searching for food around your coral? I have a shrimp in my tank that sometimes likes to bother my GSP when it gets too hungry. This is one of my indicators that I need to feed a little more.

they will randomly close for a few days sometimes.. mine does it for about 3 days out of the month every month. none of mine has ever died off it just keeps on spreading. you should only really panic when the encrusting part starts to decolor or die off.

I have somehow acquired a few mini brittle stars that climb through it but it was opening fine with some of them in it before. I got no clue how to get rid of them mini stars does anybody got a idea how?

I got another question and don't got any clue how or where to ask this. My tank is a 20 gallon JBJ rimless. 6 month old with a 50wt nicrew led fixture. The light is fine. All the water chem. Is right on the money. I mainly have softies and Ricordea is my favorite. A small Ricordea turned loose and ended up in a power head for water flow and I did not notice it for a couple days. It turned my water cloudy. All I am using for filtration in the filter it came with with carbon ceramic rings and a sponge. I throw in hang on filters every month. The coral is great besides the GSP and the water was crystal clear until the Ricordea ended up in the power head. Now it's cloudy. I've done a few water changes and crossed my fingers with no luck. It's still cloudy and I can't figure out why. The Ricordea has been removed and all coral even though it's cloudy looks awesome. It's just the water that's off. It tests perfect but is cloudy. I'm having panic attacks over it. This is my baby. I have a ton of money in it and just added a $150 mushroom rock with about 30 shrooms on it in it a few days before the cloudy started. It's been crystal clear since day one. Please help.

Add a bag of filter carbon for a week or so, it should clear the water pretty fast.

I got a couple questions. I have been into salt for 40 years. My favorite coral is Ricordea. It does great for me and always has. I have never had any die or even look bad. It is about the slowest growing coral out there. If you want any you need to just buy all you can off sites. My question is it is the only coral that does good for me. I can't even keep GSP. Some mushrooms does good and palythoa grandis does great but zoanthids does not do good. I have never tried any sps but I just don't I understand why I can't keep nothing but Ricordea. All my water parameters are spot on. My light is a 50wt led. I've set the intensity different several times with no luck. It's just a jbj 20 gallon. I have seen guys on YouTube do the same size tank with no skimmer the same light nothing but the filter on the back of a waterbox and have all kinds of killer coral that looks awesome. I am about to shut it down. I keep my hands out of it. I do weekly water changes of 50%. I have done everything I have plenty of flow. Please please please help me.

Toss a media bag of carbon into your filter sponge for a week or so. Should clear up the cloudiness.

I had a similar problem when I was first starting out. After over a month of trying everything and nothing changing, I found out that my refractometer was not testing accurately. It was off by 0.010 SG! So 1.035 SG would read as 1.025 SG. My ricordea was the only coral to survive. Even the GSP died. The ricordea didn’t look the best, but it was definitely still alive. Maybe it’s possible that your testing is off, even if it’s not as drastic of a difference as mine was! What do you use for testing?
