I've been pretty quiet for a few months, so here's an update on the tank as of 4/17:
Equipment:
Not much to share here other than the skimmer. I went with Reef Octopus Elite 220 INT. Might be an overkill but I went with BRS rating vs RO's which seemed conservative. Of course it barely fit, so it went into the secondary sump chamber, no more baffles theres.

Livestock:
Happy to report initial QT batch was a huge success. QT is never without random developments, and I had a huge haze + low PH issue during second prazi treatment, but everyone made it. Here are the current tank inhabitants:
  • Trio of purple tangs (yes, they are fighting)
  • 6 Lyretail Anthias from Kenya
  • 2 FireRed Shrimp
  • 1 Cleaner Shrimp
  • small cleanup crew
QT Round 2 is a different story, I might have gone too far, so please pray for me:
  • Powder Blue tang
  • Chocolate tang
  • Small female Watanabe angel
  • Copperband butterflyfish
  • and a 6" Linespot trigger

Very shaky start form the first year. Non-stop Ich, with 1 Velvet stint. Had to start from scratch collecting fish, and full tank treatment with Copper, we shall see if I figure out how to take all copper out of the tank.

Following with interest. Im planning my reefer max 850 build in the next couple of months. Scaring watching those $$$ go though but like you said, long term tank.

Can I ask how much sad it took to fill and how deep a bed you did?

What’s the plan coral wise? Mixed?

Hey @PandaManCub welcome to the $$$-pit. :-)

I used 100lb of Fiji Pink. Can't say it's a deep bed, but varies from 1/2" to 1".

Coral-wise I am going for SPS tank. Of course I realize it will be a huge challenge given I added copper to the system, but I am going to try anyway. Tank's running with Cuprisorb at the moment, and I am planning to run it for 2 months, followed by 1 month of no cuprisorb to see if anything leaches, followed by ICP and then more.
