I could have written "Just buy a jebao RW", and I would not be wrong. That comment is based on water movement, controllability and price. Gyre is a very cool wavemaker, mine has been on my tank since they first became available, so 10 months? A year? I lost track, but its been running long enough for me to say, its fine, but about $150 too expensive for what it is. I am a reef veteran of 25 years and service local reef tanks as well. So I can say I regularly see all types of wave devices as well as their issues etc. Currently, my gyre control can no longer be programmed... for no reason. And a piece holding one side of the impeller guard just snapped off, with literally zero effort. It had that 5 year old submerged plastic feel that had lost its strength. Overall, gyre makes a nice flow, but I'm afraid it does not offer a reasonable value. And I won't buy any more of those for myself or my clients based on price vs quality.

Well, here in Canada the gyre 150 including tax costs $405...add a controller at $140. Now that's a pump that adds up to $545.
It's stamped "made in china" on the box just like Jebao. If after 10 months or so of normal use it has developed two issues. How can I justify buying another or recommending it to a client?
Yes, it makes a useful and great flow. As I said in my first statement, I have been in the hobby for many years. I have rarely if ever seen reef gear that is both an excellent perfomer AND excellent quality... I am anxious to boast about how truly fantastic a reef item is.

I am in the same boat. I bought two Gyre when released. Both have impellers with broken fins. The sheathing into the motor block is cracking on both, can't see it lasting much longer before a call to tech support. It is not the quietest pump. They are proud of their controller for what it is (and only controlling one pump).

From day one when I received, my general impression was they tried to present an image of high quality with the tin packaging; but reality it is not there. The controller is limited in functionality, difficult to spin the speed wheel because it sticks. I could do without the tin packaging for a better default controller. Time seems to show it to by true. Also seems the design of the impeller requires more frequent cleaning because anything stringy gets wrapped around the impeller.
