Hey R2R i'm in planning process of my next tank.. and now i'm working on flow.. since the new setup will be 30" front to back and will have 2 islands off the back wall i want to do an alternating gyre flow.

I currently have 2 MP40s and was thinking instead of spending anywhere from $600-$800 on 2 more MP40 and having them on the sides i could get 4 Tunze pumps and have the flexibility of putting the pumps on the back wall. Please see the follow picture for proposed setup..

pumps will be ran in pairs and alternating

unfortunately i'm not that familiar with tunze pumps.. ideally the pumps pushing the water across the back of the tank i'll like to get a pump with a narrow spread and enough power to do so.. and the pumps pushing to the front of the tank something wide and not to powerful that it will blow the sand away on the corners..

Cool, tagging along. I have two frag tanks on order and was planning on the same when theyre ready. The method is epic for flow and especially for top down viewing. Detritus is constantly suspended and never settles. Good luck!

this is good reading. He gave a presentation at a meet that i was at.He basicly said that pointing your PH towards the water surface and all from one side in one direction would create a gyre affect. The fartest part of the tank away from the PH would have the most turbulance water movement Feature Article: Water Flow is More Important for Corals Than Light, Part V — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog

yes i've read that before and it is indeed a great article..

can anyone recomend the tunze pumps i can use to accomplish this?

all he need is 2 6105.the 6105 move more water then the mp40

so you think 2 6105 on the back wall facing the other end will move enough water to create the gyre?

Yes,in order to creat a gyre effect u have to rin it at a constant speed with no break in the flow all in onr direction

there is a local reefer that has 2 6105 in his 6x2x2 tank that has one on each end on the side that alternate the gyre every 12hrs.

I'd highly recommend barrel rolling your water column instead of rotating it round and round. Push water across from the bottom back, toward the front. Then from the front, up at and angle toward your overflow/surface. This will keep detritus in suspension and send it down your overflow. Creating the stirring effect you presented will only cause the detritus to accumulate in the center and not direct it down the overflow for your skimmer to remove. I ran a 75g like this for many years with amazing success.
