I have a 40 gallon 4ft long tank whose power heads are on their last leg. I’m likely going to upgrade my tank to a larger 75-90 gallon custom all in one. (Need to get an AIO because I don’t have space for a traditional sump below the tank).

In the meantime I need to get a new wave makers/power heads which will work well with the larger tank down the line.
While researching them I saw there are these Gyre Generators whose function and claim to leave no dead spots sounds really enticing.

Does anyone have any feedback on how they stack up? I was looking at getting 2 new powerheads (looked at current PH’s) or maybe this Grye option. I look forward to learning from you ladies and gentlemen yet again.

Gyre's definitely have the ability to move a ton of water, but I wouldn't necessarily hold a lot of faith in the "no dead spots" claim. That all depends on your aquascape, not the ability of a pump.

I recently got a Icecap 1k gyre for my 20 gallon AIO, it's almost too powerful for my little tank and will create sandstorms if I have above 10% power. I like it though and have configured it in a way that works for my tank. It was a whole lot cheaper too when compared to other controllable pumps like MP10s and such. I've also heard that gyre's do better on longer tanks, so it may be a more advantageous solution for your setup.

Hope that helps :)

What Nathaniel said times 2!

They can move a lot of water. There are still dead spots among the rocks. They can be quite temperamental when you take them apart to clean and then put back together as the motors have very little torque. So any little bind can lock them up.

If you are interested in large AIO tanks, take a look at Sea Clear System II tanks. I am running a 90g AIO from them and have had decent success.

dang, I just ordered the 3K, do you think it will be too powerful for my 90 gallon?

Awesome. Thanks for all the tips. I’m loving this forum. Happy thanksgiving everybody. I’ll likely go with the gyre from what I’m hearing. The all in one will be 75-90 gallons.

For you all in one guy’s...how wide is your compartment for pumps/filtration etc. I was thinking 4 inches....I want to get the job done without taking up too much space from the display tank.

Thanks again.

Rove, I'm looking at gyres as well. From reviews, gyre wavemaking ability is top notch across the board. However, there seem to be mixed reviews on the noise level and maintenance ease. Would these affect your decision?

There seem to be 3 types of powerheads:
1. Gyres
2. Traditional (Tunzes)
3. Low profile (Vortech, Octo, AI)

My back compartment is about 4 inches wide. Here is my build thread if you want to know more about my filtration set up.
