Gyre powerheads

I always recommended them up until recently. I ran two for almost a year....both stopped working. I was able to replace one of the motors under warranty....the second one is no longer covered. Also it seems like whenever I had to take them apart to clean, it was always a hassle to get them back together and working correctly, without excessive noise. I do recommend the Ice Cap controller though.....makes controlling them much easier than the included controller. I now use the Apex Wavs and absolutely love them.
I've had the same experience and did exactly what you've done and I'm not looking back. I had 2xmp40's on the back wall & a gyre on each side on the front. Don't get me wrong, the gyre flow is amazing but after 6-8 months post cleaning they seem to disappoint. Cleaning on these are much harder than on Vortech or the wav's due to the fiddling of the pressure fittings. One other thing to mention is that if you do get a gyre, you might see a nitrate spike as it might stir up your substrate. The wav's give me the same amount of flow, full Apex integration (partial with gyre / icecap) and they are a breeze to clean. $0.02 deposited.

Just got two gyre xf280 with controller... Now just need to figure out how to place them. Horizontal or vertical...

Anyone have any ideas on placement? Here is my current setup..

I have two of the X50s - Tried mounting them vertically, but found it too much for my poor sandbed in the 220. Even horizontal, about six inches below the surface, and I've got a sandstorm if I go above about 50% - which is odd, because I had them at 80% (max, fwd/rev mode) in the 65!

Without sand, you've got a little more leeway. Experiment and find what you like!

That's good that they seem powerful, I have so much detritus build up right now it's disgusting!

I won an XF250 at MACNA in New Orleans. So far I love it.
I have a 6 foot 210 with one overflow on the end.
I have the xf250 mounted horizontally on the opposite end from the overflow. It is programmed to go forward and reverse, using two "B" cages and props.
The rear blade moves water across the top, and the front blade moves it down and across the bottom.
This makes a reversing current that blows the corals one way and then the other.
I have taken it apart and put it back together and it is still quiet.
I am only running it at max 20% and it still moves plenty of water in my tank. I have mostly hammers and torches, so I don't want to tear them up.

Great to hear. I am on the fence if I go with this one for my 125. How was the cleaning when you took it apart. I think this is the point that still have me concerned vs going with the Vortech.

Thanks in advance...

It was easy to take apart, so I am not sure what the complaints are about. Of course mine was brand new when I took it apart.

Wow these things are great. Any suggestions on best setting?
I have mine set to go through 5 different settings throughout the day. I have it placed horizontally at one end of my 40B and have it set to hit 40% max. I could probably go more but then it moves all the sand at the other end

I'm noticing a little hum when one of them turns on, it's a little noticeable but nothing to crazy

I like the way that they move the water. Really pushing a huge wave rather than a focused stream. Due to the huge amount they push you can have these pump set at a lower speed. I really like mine. As a matter of fact I have three pairs. Two pairs of 250s and one pair of 240s. I am planning on a 300G build.
