Hey guys. I have a 180 gal sps reef. A pair of mp40s and tunzee 1500gph pump on each side of tank. Need a powerhead for back glass. Maxspect gyre or a 3rd mp40?

Sale on the MP40 going on. $299.00. Saw it on line at BulkReef supple and Saltwater Aquarium. Don't know how long the sale will last. I purchased one just because of the price. I have 2 MP10 in my 57g reef tank and 1 MP10 on my 75g FOWLR tank.

The MP40 seems to be a permanent price drop... I would stick with the MP40.

I agree with the others, I think running the gyre along the top of the water then the MP40's on the back glass would be perfect. You could probably remove the Tunze's completely.

I have a Elos XL160. 200 gals that measures 61 X 31 X 24. Was running a MP 40 and a MP 60 on the opposing end. The Gyre is incredible. Created a snow storm the first time i turned it on. The flow at 50% is more than the Vortec's. Rocks look cleaner and overall tank appearance is improved. Will have to see how well the Gyre holds up. I'd recommend the Maxspect

A pair of 40's on the back wall? I don't think your gunna get a wide enough flow pattern from a pair to get a even amount of flow. Id say 3 maybe. I gyre on one side will do your entire tank well.

A pair of 40's on opposing sides cranked up to 75-100% would probably do fine. But your at $600 vs $300.

I already have a pair of mp40s on the sides. So i guess im trying to deciding between a 3rd mp40 or a gyre because i need more flow from back wall.

I say MP40

Part of why I say this is that I have always been cautious of new products. I go back to my experience with the new Koralia's. Purchased four and today not a single one is running. I have the old Koralia's, and still use one of these for mixing salt. I want to wait and see how the new Gyre performs over the next couple years. For one, they need to fix the small snail issue. The MP is proven...and now at a more reasonable price. I have a total of four, and other then a piece of plastic breaking in one wet side, haven't had any problems.

I currently run gyro in my 450 and works great I think its better than mp,s just my opinion

I used to have an mp60 on one side and a 40 on the opposite side. When the gyre came out I bought it right away and set it up opposite of my mp60 and moved the mp40 to the back wall. When the gyre is running I can see forced water flow more than 5' across the tank. It appears to darn near render the mp60 useless (even though this isn't necessarily true) except for the 1' directly in front. I am basing this looking at the water flow at the top of the tank which is certainly unfair to the mp60. Having said all of that, to prove my point, when the mp60 and ramping up and the gyre is on I cannot feel any specific water flow from my mp40 when putting my hand in the water. However, I know it is doing something because the sand is completely blown away in front of the mp40. This is probably happening when the gyre is in reverse mode and not impacting the mp40 as much. I am happy with this and will just use a larger particle sized sand in that area.

My recommendation is to definitely buy the gyre if you are comfortable buying "new to market" hardware. The polyp extension on my sps has never been better since adding the gyre. I also had a chance to chat with Jake Adams this weekend about Gyre flow and he had a very interesting idea on how to create a sort of washing machine effect using the gyre in tandem with the vortechs in NTM. I have since switched away from Reef Crest to NTM to see if there is any positive or negative effect.

What I love about adding a different type of flow to the tank is as simple as this...I really don't see any benefit whatsoever in turbulent water flow away from the corals (what happens with two vortechs on reef). By adding the Gyre I see the gyre flow pattern very easily when I introduce some food to the tank (even with the vortechs running) which gives me a bit of peace of mind that the benefits of the gyre is still happening, yet where the sps corals are at there is that turbulent water. My goal really is to get another gyre on the opposite side and remove the mp60 till I get a larger tank (this one is 210). I like the mp40 on the back wall and feel an mp60 would be too much power for such a short distance and my sand would seriously be everywhere.

If i put a gyre on one side, and move the pair of mp40s i have to back glass, how would i configure them? Sync, antisync, no syc, ntm, pulse etc ......

If you get the gyre just put it on one side. You will probbaly be able to remove your other powerheads. My grye replaced two tunze streams and an mp40

I have a 120 with 2 mp40s and the new gyre. I like both, the gyre move a tremendous amount of water in this linear zone. I think it's great to really move the majority of your DT water yet the mp's offer a means for more chaotic flow/randomization. If you are ok with new products....go with the gyre.

I run the same size with the same powerheads, a 120 with 2 40's and a gyre. I also like both but the gyre is a clear winner to me. I have the 40's on the sides and the gyre vertically alternating flow every 10min. I can see when the gyre changes, the LPS and bottom guys have different movement and the SPS up top get the blast from the vortechs. Although honestly I think it would be better with the mp40s on the back and gyre at the side, but I have not done it only because of looks!

That settles is. Just picked up the gyre. Gonna run the two mp40s on back glass. I welcome suggestions how to go about using them in that way though--sync, antisync, separate, pulse etc....
