Having a hard time dialing in flow in my 75 gallon that’s mainly euphyllia, LPS, and a couple SPS frags, with 2 of the Reef Octo Pulse 2’s on a WaveEngine. I’ve tried pulse modes, sine waves, LPS mode, etc, just keep missing the mark it seems. I have a couple of the IceCap 1k’s that I’m considering attempting to fidget with enough to make the tank happy. Any gyre users out there who have created a nice gentle flow, and if so what settings/placement are a good starting point? Tank is 48”x18” standard 75 gallon… thanks!

What exactly is the problem? Are you stating the flow is too much?

My torches and frogspawns prefer random flow. Low to medium. Heck they even get a gust every now and then from my now gyrees but used to be mp40 in frag tank. Moved my mp40 to main system now. Gyrees are better to get rid of dead spots

I can’t really get a gentle sway, plus fairly large dead spots directly under the pumps. I’m guessing my scape could be the issue. Seems like flow is lacking in a lot of spots, but too turbulent in others, and also creates a massive current on the sand in spots. Just difficult to explain but not super happy with any flow mode with the Pulse’s…

I don't have sand in my frag tank. But I had 2 mp40s on back wall of frag tank. I had dead spots directly under neath pumps outward like 8 inches and to the sides toward overflow. Changed to redsea gyree. No I have no dead spots as I pointed one side of gyree towards bottom to get rid of dead spot and other forward. Worked like charm. Just angle the one side of gyree toward the dead spot

I also placed gyrees in my display on back wall. No corals in there yet. But flow seems very gentle compared to my tunze. Will see once I get corals in there. Have the mp40' and gyree on back wall.

I've got 2 icecap 2k gyres in my 32 gallon, I made it work so you can too, it just takes a lot of playing around with. It took me about 2 weeks to get it set the way I like it. My euphyllia wiggle and boogie all day...

Are they on the icecap controller or a WaveEngine? What are you settings and placement?

They are on a wave engine which is connected to the hydros. They are on the 2 sides of the glass, one is an inch under water the other is halfway down. The one that is an inch under water is turned off from noon to 7 pm, for my clams benefit. The one working gyre is at 35% during this time. They both run in off-hours at 45%, they are both on 4 square pattern with reverse on.

Ok cool, something to start with. Are they pointed toward the water surface, or straight across?

This coral species isn’t terribly picky when it comes to the proper placement in your tank. The trick would really be just to avoid the extremes. Avoid extremely bright locations or areas of very high current, and avoid areas that are too dark or with currents that are too low. Fast currents create risk damage to their soft, fleshy polyps (and getting an infection). Bright lights can cause bleaching. Insufficient lighting will cause the poor coral to wither away and starve to death.
These corals only require a moderate amount of light for photosynthesis and can grow well in the intermediate regions of your tank. Just about any reef LED lighting should be sufficient for most tanks. I utilize moderate white light intensity and keep it off the sand bed which sand can irritate it.
The polyps should sway in the current, but not sustain so much pressure they are constantly bent over their skeleton. Too much flow will tear the polyps (worst case) and cause the polyps do not extend in the first place (best case). So, don’t give them too much flow.
Calcium and alkalinity are two very important water parameters that will affect the growth of your coral. This coral will start to die off if the calcium levels are too low. A calcium level of about 400 ppm is just right.

They were both pointing across, then I cleaned one and when I put it back together it pointed up towards the surface. I dont know how or why, thats why its halfway down my tank. I'm afraid to clean the other one now.

Gotcha. For the square pattern what was the duration?

Ended up using one of my Gyres on the right side of the tank, and put an existing OctoPulse 2 on the back wall of the tank on the left corner. The 2 Gyres were just too much even running low. Getting a nice flow pattern I’m happy with and no dead spots I can see. Running a Nutrient Export mode that flushes the tank out as well.
