I am thinking of switching away from my Neptune WAVs to Gyres, because of the battery back up option. I am wondering, however... if I put then in my tank, should I turn the return pump off to see how where the water lowers to, in order to make sure the Gyres do not run partialy out of the water if the power goes out?

It's probably a good idea since the gyre manual warns that they should not be run dry.

That said though, I doubt a couple of minutes of dry running on such short and infrequent occasions as the DT refilling once the power comes back on after an outage will cause and damage. A geyser of splashing as the water rises to meet the spinning blades, perhaps. But damage, probably not.

I was more concerned of them running on the battery backup while the return pump is dead because of a power out.
