125g 6ft mixed reef. 2 Koralia 1150s on each end, alternating with Hydor controller. Trigger sump with macro lit by AI fuge. Reed Octopus skimmer, filter sock. BRS gfo/carbon 2 reactor setup. Nopox. Parameters fantastic.

I have an old Penguin filter in the middle that creates a minor "gyre" perhaps. The 4 rite size e filters catch a ton and are cleaned maybe as often as filter sock replacement (3 days?). I am thinking of replacing it with a gyre at that same point, pushing toward front of tank.

Pros I see. Better gyre/movement in the middle of the tank, might look better, no more cleaning/replacing rite size e filters, no more embarrassing old tech.

Cons: I fear losing the additional filtration and carbon for softie toxins.

If you were me, keep the Penguin or switch to gyre?

I have a gyre in my 120 that I am replacing because I found a really good deal on a pair of mp40’s. The good deal is the only reason I am changing. I use an apex and control everything but my gyre with it. I really like the ease of apex control with the mp40’s. My gyre did everything I could want it to do in the 120. It is an xf250 and really moved a lot of water. It would also take up less room and give a more uncluttered look. I agree if it is working don’t change it. The gyre would probably do a better job moving the water across that distance but you would probably still need something on the other side.
If you are interested check out my for sale listing. A 125 is a long tank to move water across. When you consider your rock in the middle no single pump is going to do job moving water although the tank.
