I would be concerned as the gyre pulls from below and would blow most particulate away from the weir. Unless you run reverse gyre, but that would be pretty inefficient. Mine run opposed on each side so stuff tends to gather around and then into the weir. Others may have more experience with trying this but I would be concern that your thoughts are correct about it just staying suspended and not exiting.
The water still drains though right? So I would think even though it might not look like it, i'm sure the difference is negligible.
The magnets on the wet side are exposed I’m sure there water proof, the back part isn’t but looks petty sealedMy thought on it is that I wouldn't be too keen on water running over the portion of the magnet that is supposed to be outside of the aquarium. I can't be certain but I wouldn't think it would be ao impervious to water as the wet side as that would increase production costs. BUT I could be way off base with my assessment.
