Hi all, I’ve been marveling before a blue tip sebae anemone for a while but there’s 3 things holding me back: 2 blood red fire shrimp and a yellow clown goby. I have a 4 feet long tank. I’m wondering if it would be thinkable to add it without casualties as I also have two oscellaris clowns not hosting anything... Experiences \ opinions are welcome. Thanks!

How old is the tank ? If it’s only a few months old I would wait

The rocks started cycling around 7 months ago with bio spira and I’m getting coralline growth. I am aware of stability requirements for nems but would like to give it a go even if I’ll be on my toes for a while. What worries me is to have shrimps or a ycg eaten by it. Research only tells me they might eat smaller fish or shrimp but the experience of others would help me to make a choice.

It’s a nem if they get near it it will eat them. That’s what they do.

I guessed as much though People still keep them with shrimp and fish so how rare is it that a fish/shrimp is dumb enough to venture there?

It happenes i don’t know the probability of percentages but it happens. I don’t mean this rude at all so please don’t take it this way ok but I would fell bad if I didn’t say something. You said you know the stability requirements but really want to give it a go even it you have to be on your toes for awhile. I told you that this nem could eat your fish and shrimp but then you wanted to know probabilities of it. These are living things we sometimes lose track of this because they are so pretty and temping along with other reasons. Again please don’t take this the wrong way because I’m not trying to be mean. I’m sure everyone of us has bought because we really wanted something in our reef without listening to someone and the animal died. Hell I did with a mandirne so with that please just think about it a little more happy reefing.

Probability: 100% you will lose your fish and shrimp and maybe a finger. They are one of the species that gets large. That coupled with the fact they are one of the sticky ones. Once touched they do not let go. Your clowns can even be in for a wild ride.

If you want your anemone to host clownfish, be sure it is 3 to 4 times larger in diameter than the length of the clown fish you introduce, or it will be 'loved' to death. A 4" - 6" anemone with clowns that are introduced at a young age of 1" to 1.5" will work out well. Keep in mind, the more clowns you have translates into more "inches" of fish for your anemone. It is best to buy the anemone first and give it a few months to acclimate and grow before adding clowns. Not all clowns take to all H. crispa.

As long as your tank is stable and you have good lighting they are not that difficult to keep.

Shrimp should be no big deal, as well as most fish, as long as you have decent swim space, most know to avoid it.

They do max at about 2 feet in diameter, just fyi, so you will need to buffer area to keep from touching corals.

The other "sebae" is H. Malu, which is much smaller and a sand dwellar, so if you were looking for smaller and have a sand bed that is an option.

Resurrecting this thread because about to get that sebae. Thank you for your information. As far as my journey into reef keeping went I am pretty sure the tank is stable enough. I have two btas doing well and it is a 92g with 32g sump. I will buy the malu instead to make sure my blood shrimp couple have more chance to avoid it and transferred the lovable yellow clown goby couple in my 30g. Again thank you for not just trying to scare me out of this buy. I noticed many advice come from people taking lack of good husbandry as the norm for newbs and thus many people are scared to get into this hobby. Cheers :)
