Hey everyone. I went to a convention in Gatlinburg for a few days about a month ago and my calcium reactor's feed pump got clogged. The pump may have been clogged a few days prior and I didn't notice. The alkalinity dropped way down and I lost all of the montiporas I had. I thought the acros were okay but over the the next few weeks some of them slowly died off. I brought the alkalinity back up slowly and everything that is still living seems to be doing very well. It seems like this stuff always happens when I'm gone. I thought about giving it up yet again but I am going to press on. I just don't know when to quit.

Mike,

I hate to hear this. Keep your chin up man. glad to see you are sticking with it.

Sorry to hear this. I've been considering setting up a Cal reactor, is there something you can do so the tube that was blocked never gets blocked?

Sorry to hear about your loses Mike. I run my calcium reactor off a manifold from my return pump. Knock on wood no issues yet. Prior to the manifold I used a maxi-jet 1200 and often times had to clean it. Keep on pushing on. I say to many reefers the best thing I ever did for my tank was adding a calcium reactor.

Get your params back in order Keep a close eye on the tank for he next few months and
keep and ears close eye on nitrates , ammonia and nitrites. Make sure you are running new carbon, Fe remover etc... if you already aren't. Sorry it' very frustrating. It will be a waiting game the next weeks.
good luck, Chris

PS:If you need anyting Fee free to send me a P

Sorry to hear this. Always happens when you go out of town. I'm about to add a Cal Rx to my system so please post on how to prevent this. Even if you got out, you'd be back. Once you catch the salty fever you never lose it. lol

sorry for your losses. Unfortunately, these types of things happen in this hobby and it's a great sign that you're sticking with it. There wouldn't be any reefers left if people gave up when issues happen :( we've all been there in one capacity or another.

There's nothing you can do to prevent this. You just have to clean it ever so often. This is one of the reasons I can't make my mind up on reactors

Not sure why I haven't been getting notifications. Sorry I haven't replied. The tank is doing fine now. I lost most of the montiporas and some of the other SPS. I have a MaxiJet feeding the reactor with a reducing fitting glued into the output. It just took a little piece of trash to clog it up where it was reduced. I really had gotten pretty lazy around that time so I really didn't pay much attention to if water was running through the reactor or not.

I can frag you a piece of Reeftech Starburst cap to help you get started back if you'd like.

Welcome to the club! It's a great place to be and the community really pulls together during the down times.
