75g reef with 20g sump/refuge. tank has about 3 inches of sand/garf grunge mix in display. Have 4 bulb t-5 retrofit, but only running 2. my skimmer doesnt really pull alot of skimmate (its a cheaper HOB skimmer, my good one broke over 2 years ago, but it has never had a problem. skimmate mainly tanish/brown colored water once a week, not dark and thick.

water params: salinity - 1.026, pH - 7.8, nitrates - 0, nitrite - 0, ammonia - 0, phosphate - 0, KH - 200-300. I haven't checked calcium and magnesium levels in a while but my coral are still growing great and fish are doing fine.

Coral is a mix of soft and LPS. I have an old clown, six line wrasse, and 2 yellow tail damsels. I also have a pencil urchin. I moved him from my display to my refuge because he was damaging some of my soft coral. I had a yellow tang hoping to control my hair algae, but he did not really even touch it. he died after about six months of having him, and since then the hair algae has gone from alot on the back of my tank to growing large amounts on my live rock and pumps. i also got a good number of snails, crabs, and even 2 fuzzy chitons to try and help control it. nothing has helped and the algae continues to grow out of control. oh and of course i've been doing weekly water changes and decreasing the light time. have had the bulbs for 5 months. before this I never did weekly changes, i maybe did them monthly before and never had any problems lol. Oh, I also have 4 or 5 mangroves, and some chaeto.

any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Should I maybe try to take my water to get tested at a LFS (if they do that here in birmingham, AL lol). or should I continue to pull it off everything and hope it gets better with water changes? I'm just lost and have no idea what else to do. I've had this tank for over 5 years and while all my coral looks great and growing the hair algae is just such a nuisance.

Thank you,
MalNurs

After figuring out the water Tds...... How about trying a 3 day blackout and maybe adding another tang. Scopas are workhorses IMO.

i just use tap water. never had the money to get a ro/di system. just built my tank over a long period lol. with a scopas tang would a small one do fine in my 75g? and as it grows just trade it back in at LFS for another small one? just curious. most of my fish I have had for a long time and just add a few at a time. so I don't want my tank to be too small and not allow him to thrive.
Thanks for the help. and i will look on ebay and craigslist for a used ro/di system.

Thank you,

My tap water is loaded with phosphates. I'm not sure about yours but by the time you spend time and money on fish for algae control including spending time quarantining the fish and disease threats you could have paid for a nice new RO/DI that makes zero TDS water.

They really aren't that expensive and it's one of the best investments you can make for your reef. You'll find that your coral health will improve and your whole tank will be more enjoyable.

Also, while more expensive in the long run, you can get RO/DI water pretty cheap at your local grocery store.

tap water is the issue for sure... i did the same when first started and had the same problem... as i started switching to ro for water changes the problem slowly went away... could also try GFO in a reactor but take it slow with it

Your phosphates and nitrates are zero because the hair algae is sucking them up immediately.

Using tap water, I will guarantee that is your problem. I would get a RO/DI unit and start doing weekly (at least 20%) water changes.

Also, how old are your bulbs? T5’s need to be changed yearly.

I agree that your tap water is problematic. I think you have other problems too. Although you may be getting some skim mate out of your skimmer, it's probably not enough, so in addition to getting a decent RO/DI unit I'd put a new skimmer on your wish list. You didn't mention any reactors, so if you don't already have them I'd include both a GFO and GAC reactor. What kind of test kits are you using?
