I have a good amount of hair algae in my 55 reef tank. (Mostly my own fault as I don't use RODI water) But I currently have a One Spot Foxface that does an amazing job of keeping the algae in check. I know he's too big for my 55, I had him in a 125 that I recently broke down. I have someone coming to pick him up tomorrow to re home him in a bigger tank. Anyways, my point is when he's gone I need something to help keep the algae mowed down. I would love a tang, but they all get too big. I hate hermit crabs because all they do is kill each other.

Any suggestions for an algae destroyer that is reef safe and doesn't get too big for a 55 Gallon tank? I have mostly soft corals.

If you don’t already have one I would start with a large clean up crew (50-100 pieces) and with your help manually removing as much as you can during water changes, this will go a long way in controlling it.. here is what reef cleaners recommends for a 55

I would suggest a lawnmower Blenny. Mine is an absolute workhorse! I use him and Astrea snails in my 32 gallon. How long is your light schedule?

Since you have a reef tank, I strongly recommend using RO water. Many local grocery stores now sell RO water or your LFS.

I was thinking the lawnmower blenny as well. They have such entertaining personalities lol I have one in my other reef tank and he does an amazing job. Was just seeing some other suggestions so I didn't have too much of the same thing in both tanks.

Bristletooth tangs like a tomoni tang will help as well. They stay pretty small.

I have a starry Benny in my 10 gallon as well. Such great personalities.
