How many of you have successfully used a reduced photo period and zero reds, whites and yellows to eliminate nuisance algae?

My no3 and no4 levels are consistsntly at or near zero. Running GFO, carbon, and a small HOB refugium. Water change 10% per week. Recently been doing water changes twice a month.

30 gallon tank, no sump, 3 fish, 1 Halloween hermit, 1 pin cushion urchin, 1 astrea snail, 1 sea hare.

What will help is to raise your Magnesium levels to 1500. This will help to kill off the hair algae.

Tried it for months. Didn't work. There are many hair algaes out there and some are hardier than others. The stuff I had wouldn't go away until I literally scrubbed it from my rocks. Good Luck.

The Easiest Way is Hydrogen Peroxide (3 Percent).

Dose Your Tank 1 ML Per 10 Gallons Once a Day.

After a Week or 2 The Hair Algae will barely be attached.

Use a Syphon and it will come right off.

I don't know why people still bother with GFO, Lighting, etc.

This is the Easiest Way by Far and Guaranteed.

Why Waste all that Time and Energy (Scrubbing).

It will just come back anyways most Likely.

Dose Peroxide.

Interesting. How big is the urchin? My pincushion urchin cleared a 90 gallon in under two weeks and kept it in check until the tank and rocks matured enough. The thing you need to be cognizant of is that the hair algae is consuming phosphate and nitrate to survive and grow. If you are registering at or near zero it is because the algae has already consumed it. Could be leaching phosphate from the rock as well.

Agree with Logger head ! I suspect dry base rock I added is part of my algae issue . I suspect it's leaching nutrients .

Reef flux has worked in the past for me.
After about two weeks zero algea.

Guess what it didn't come back. I actually scrubbed with peroxide outside the tank and rinsed with water. That workes really well. Of course I got my inorganic nutrients under control also.
