I am new and all I have in my 72g is a pistol shrimp,2 O. clown, royal gramma, brittle star and a crowie snail. Green hair algae is taking over. Is there something better than a s blue legged crab or is he going to be my best bet?

I have also heard that a counch will eat up lots of algae. But you need to figure out why you have this algae problem. There are several post that will help you.

Moved to current forum.

Adding CUC members will help reduce the algae, but you need to get to the root cause. The algae is being fed by excess nutrients and there are several factors that contribute to it.

Also reduce food input and other possible nutrients input. for a few weeks 3-4 and it will start to starve and release then you can syphon out.

+1! Find the root of the problem. :)

What kind of water are you using? Tap? RO? Have you tested your phosphates and nitrates? What kind of lighting and how old are the bulbs? These are some things that also contribute to GHA.

I use tap I do put the tap water drops in to breakdown the bad stuff. My ph is 8 and nitrates 0. My bulbs are 6 months old...

Its the tap water. You can't get rid of phosphates in the water by adding drops. Get a big CUC if you are going to continue using tap water.

hair agle out breack

cut your light back i had the same thing happen when i went to t-5 lighting i had to cut the time back i run my blue from 7 am and turn on my white light about 2hrs a day
i use the water that you can buy out of the water bottle place and add you need to check phos test you need some in your tank but not a whole lot

Tap water is a contributor to the gha I would suggest looking into a RO unit, if your lfs sales it get it from them, or look at your local grocery store to see if they have those large water machines.

I think that amount of food is a bit much for three fish and the excess waste is also feeding the gha. Try feeding smaller amounts a couple of times a day.

Try feeding every other day
Also as stated get a clean up crew. Sea hares are great but be ready to re home once algae its gone.
Are you running gfo, pellets, vodka dosing, skimmer. A lot more info needed

I've always used tapwater for four years never had any problems With nuisance AlgaeI use a Phosphate Reactor and good flow you can still get Hair Algael in Ro water tanks despite what the experts say it can be done sometimes other tunnel vision because It didn't work for them .

Sure you can use tap water but there are impurities in it that contribute to the gha growth. also depending on where you are the city may add additives that contribute to this as well. I would check with the city and see what they add to the water if you are going to continue to use it.

Thanks everyone for the help. I went and got a good mix of cleaning crew yesterday. My protean skimmer is dialed in now as well as I am starting to play with my lights for duration of halide and blues. Hopefully that will help. My water has no impurities so I'm going to continue to use my tap... Thanks agin I'm glad I have some people to help!!
