what cridders eat hair algae?

Peroxide
Margarite snails
Peroxide

From this to this in under a month with that formula 20 mg of peroxide for every 50 gallons of water twice a day I f I rember correctly I don't remember u would have to check my thread out I did on it

I agree to a certain extent I have the same water conditions as I did before but I don't have the same algea it was introduced on a drag plug and ran rampant as I was dealing with sick fish

The fact that it keeps growing says there's enough nutrients in your tank to keep it going. if you don't want to work on your nutrients you can try things like a yellow tang, turbo snails, sea hair, rabbitfish, etc. but if you go that route I'd still recommend getting a hand on your nutrients to prevent future issues. makes your fish more happy too. :)

So snail less food water changes

Less food and more/bigger water changes, possibly. how much water do you change and how often? although the results may not be accurate right now, have you tested no3 and po4?

I do 10% water changes once a week on this 2.5 gallon tank

Ten isn't enough 90% as super old picos do=guaranteed

Always pick up the rock and hand scrub off the algae in my opinion. Any animals you add are for growback prevention, hopefully, but not for removal. If you let it seat and fragment further in the tank it will get worse, rebound more. All you have to do to be algae free lift it out and clean it off with peroxide and put it back

The number of successful long term 2.5s documented ran off 10% weekly is none, the number started in that manner is thousands.

Not saying it isn't possible with counter filtration but it's not working so far I think it should be stepped down from 90% starting, to the minimum the tank allows without algae regrowth and hand guiding of algae will still be required along the way so that none is ever purposefully grown on the rocks. If forced clean they will not grow algae.

I only asked because your photos make it look much bigger. :)

I would also recommend large water changes and manual removal. test your no3 and po4.

sea hares are great alge eaters, but after the alge is gone they can starve. I fed mine nori for a while after he ate the alge in my tank, but ended up giving him to the aquarium store when it became too much of a hassle to feed him. If you get one, just be sure that he gets fed or given to someone else after the hair alge is gone.

you dont have to go low nutrient. I for one never do. algae is hard to beat low nutrient it tends to be more resilient than even corals. With a robust clean up crew you can export the nutrients from the hair algae to macro algae. Zebra and cat eye turbo snails will both devour hair algae, bryopsis green micro algae and keep your tank spotless. All you need is some macro algae and it will absorb all of the nitrates.

I go skimmerless and feed heavy in my tanks and there is zero algae anywhere to be seen. I have 1 snail per gallon and if its too many than slowly a few will die off and create a perfect balance.

More cleaning crew, check your nutrients Po4's .001 to .003 ppm, and No3' 3 to 4 ppm. I change water every two to three weeks, water changes are temporary. It is time to play detective and discover the real issue that is causing the algae, once that is established, problem solved

a fun challenge for the thread

all examples so far come from not pico reefs, the scaling and biology is different perhaps

each one try and find a 2.5 example of the idea/post, see if that pico example is past the common breakpoint of three years just to press its consistency. this helps distill any differences if applicable between volumes, just a fun challenge.

what the tiniest bit of white light imbalance does to a true pico given N and P dilutions vs literally any other size tank makes the model require the same model imo to be accurate

the detritus big tanks store up doesn't work well in picos, that dilution...
