I'm having trouble with hair algae in my 60 gal reef. I do 20% weekly water changes, use only rodi water, and have a protein skimmer and refugium. The aquarium is lightly stocked with 2 clowns, a lawnmower blenny and a small clean up crew. I've been feeding every other day to reduce any nutrients. I have some chaeto in the refugium but the hair algae has been out competing and has engulfed it. I try to remove the hair algae every week but it comes back thicker each week.

Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance

It’s probably bc of your rock. Keep up with your water changes however next time you do a water change, make sure you scrub your rock and siphon all the algae. If you can remove 30% of the water and take all the rock out to scrub in the old water (of course it depends if you can get your scape back or willing to have it not be the same)

Get a really good clean up crew to help for the in between water changes, eventually your gha will die down. Also keep your lights running only for 6 hours for the time being. I’ve been here and that is what worked for me.

When I was battling hair algae for months the clincher was Mexican turbo snails. Keep doing 20% water changed and I used Phosoban. Eventually got 5 Mexican turbo snails, the big ones, for my 46g bowfront and that finally resolved it. After they have done their job some are going to die due to lack of food. Also, probably best to restart refugium after hair algae cleared up, my chaeto kept dying during this process, probably because of Phosoban stripping Phosphate. That's what you want but refugium can't compete.

Had the best luck using fluconazole. Takes out Bryopsis pretty quickly, but takes awhile longer for GHA.
