I seem to be starting to get a good amount of hair algae on my lr. it doesn't bother me too much, my tank is really only for me to look at and i wouldn't say its out of control. i was wondering, after seeing so many threads about all-out year long wars against hair algae, is it really that bad, or is it just aesthetically displeasing to some? should i be worried? thanks !

An environment of algal growth is not a good environment when let too much algae can notexist if a small number do not worry!

Small amounts of it are not a huge problem, in my experience. But I do think if you have some, you may end up with too much soon. I'd try and get rid of it and would make sure my skimmer, carbon, water changes, gfo, lighting, and feeding schedule were sufficient to keep nutrient levels low.. Tuxedo urchins are hardy and will usually eat it. They are also slow and easy to remove, once the algae is gone.

I would start looking for why the hair algae is growing. Excess organics on your rock? overfeeding? too much phosphate or nitrate? Skimmer not working optimally? lights need changing? Too many fish? There are many causes but in any case it can get out of control quickly and in severe cases cover your corals. Not something to live with especially if you see it starting to spread. Like anything bad that happens in this hobby, it happens quick and then you are stuck with a major job on your hands. There are several types of snails that will take it out but I would look for the cause 1st
