Hey there!
So, i had been experiencing some rtn in several (not all) of my sps. Today, I decided to take a look in the sump, and found a hairpin from one of my daughters. The hairpin was already half rusted, but I don’t know what are the materials from the hairpin, and fear that it has leached some heavy metals in the tank.
Did anyone have a similar issue, and how did you fix the problem (besides the TPA that I will be starting tonight!), or what action do you recommend to correct this problem?

I would not be the least concerned unless its a 5 gallon tank. . LOL. Remove if you can but I had a 360g which at sale of it did not realized my stainless steel clamps were totally rusted for at least 2 years and My ICP never disclosed issues with metals.

I would suggest that you do a water change - (check for other hairpins - where there is one there could be 2 etc). And there are various things you can use to absorb metals, cuprisorb works well, polyfilters work well (and are easy) carbon will also help. You can always send an ICP test - Depending on the volume - my guess is that the RTN and the hairpin are unrelated.

BTW - i.e. - I would check the other parameters, etc - such that you are evaluating every cause of RTN - rather than focusing on the hairpin. (You probably have already done that)

I am checking my po4, no3, kh, mg and ca on a regular basis, and they are quite steady:
Kh- 9-10
Ca 420
Mg 1350
Po4- <0.1
No3- 2.5-5
I noticed, nevertheless, a rotten smell from my skimmate, when it is usually more “earthy”. Besides that, the hairpin was not uniformly rusted, and it was blue painted, so I am afraid that it has leached heavy metals other than iron. I will be sending the icp test to triton tomorrow, but it will take some time to come back, so I would like to take action asap. Will try the triton detox , as @esther suggested, but would like other suggestions?
