agree 100% to not cycle with fish, i will try another small piece with the acid and see what happens, this rock has a ton of dead organics on the outside i could just imagine what is deep inside the rock. good luck with your start up.Go with the bleach bath. I started my tank with dead rock about 5 weeks ago. I thought the dead matter would be a good idea to start the cycle instead of the fish cycle. I think the fish cycle is just torture on the poor animal. From my experience the nitrites and nitrates are off the chart and hard to get down. I just started my skimmer so let's see if they will drop.
Don't think I'd use sea-based dry rock again without a bleach cure on my own tanks. It works awesome.
Guess I learn more and more every year. If you are in a hurry you are in the wrong hobby. The best results come to those who demonstrate patience.
I'd give it a week or two and inspect.
I set up my tank with the same rock 3 years ago. I washed it with a hose. Bleached it for 2 days. Washed and scrubbed it. It had a pile of organics. Then I rinsed it thoroughly to remove the bleach.
The bleach did a good job removing the organics. But the rock leached phosphates. I would advise curing in salt water and completely changing the water until you get 0 phosphates.
Be very carful with the Haitian rock, it melts extremally quick in muriatic acid.
