Hi,

Just wondering if anyone have half BB and half sand bed in their display tank. any insight will be great.

Thanks!

I think Troylee used to have a setup like that in his dropoff tank. It wasn't really by choice, but IIRC the sand kept blowing from the upper portion to the lower portion leaving him somewhat BB up top.

i am placing the rocks on a small risers and trying to have sand in the front only. the backwall will be powered by 3-4 power heads to keep flow under the rocks.

Why would you like to do that? For the wrasses to sleep or something like that?

Yes and i do enjoy the look of sand but rather have BB lol.

There's no need for that, you can have a large bowl filled with sand for them. I have a Radiant Wrasse and a Yellow Wrasse, both of them sleep in the same bowl, it has a least 4 inches of sand. They do make a mess when they are going to sleep so I have to clean the barebottom every week and add more sand.

I have about 15lbs of carib sea special grade in my 150. I have set up the last three sps tanks set up like this. Mostly the sand gets blown under and behind the rocks. The wrasses stay away from my corals this way. I've been satisfied with this method. The longest I've had a tank set up in this style is 2 years. Never had any problems, I think if you want just a little sand you'll be fine.

Thanks everyone. now i just got to figure out how much flow i need in order to keep all the sand closer to the front side on the tank.
