See the single zoa next to the war coral? Why would the zoa stay half open like this?? It never seems to be fully open like it was at my LFS.

Will a single zoa turn into many??
 
The favia is probably stinging it at night. Yes one zoa can grow into a colony but that close to another coral there will be trouble.
 
They call then war corals for a reason, they have nasty stingers they can extend pretty far.
 
I agree with everything already mentioned. Mine also do this when a starfish or snail decides to sit on it for a while. If it's in a safe place it should slowly open back up again. Depending on the zoa, it may take a while before it starts splitting and spreading out.
