Halichoeres Wrasses

I believe they're all for the most part considered reef safe. I want to say it's the inverts you have to worry about.

Ones I have kept without invert predation : crysus, claudia, chrysotaenia.

I've also got a melasmopomas in QT that is also supposed to be unlikely to be unsafe with inverts.

I have crysus on order. Im excited to finally get him.
If we have a lone wrasse in a tank, will it eventually become a terminal male? or will it live out its life in transitional male phase?

Halichoeres species as safe as melanurus would include: chrysus, leucoxanthus, biocellatus, richmondi, timorensis, argus, iridis, trispilus, melasmapomus, chrysotaenia, ornatissimus, claudia, pelicieri, hartzfeldi, rubricephalus, leucurus, papilionaceus. Slightly less sage would include marginatus.

I had to take my Melanarus out because every time I added a fairy or flasher wrasse he would harass it for months. Im 5 weeks into a fishless DT with another 6 weeks to go. Once I empty out my QT tanks, I will be ready to start restocking.

Curious on this question as well. Have a H. Pelicieri juvenile on the way.

It depends on the particulr genus, but Cirrhilabrus, Halichoeres, and Paracheilinus generally transition even if they are the sole wrasse.

Can you have a chrysotaenia and a melanarus in the same tank?
If tbere are a few other Halichoeres, and the tank is large enough, they can coexist, but I wouldn't recommend it. They can be quite aggressive with one another.

I wouldn't do it either. Plus, the casual observer will just see two of the same same fish. ;)

Yep, if a buddy is over and recognizes your H. chrystaenia and knows it's not a melanarus he's a wrasse guy! :-)
