halichoeres zeylonicus (goldstripe wrasse)

What can you guys tell me about my most recent impulse buy? Trying to figure out which of my tanks to put it.

Never heard of or seen this guy before. Have I been living under a rock or is it uncommon?

It, H. hartzfeldi, and H. pelecieri are sister species, they are widespread and common in their habitats, just not collected too frequently. They get a little larger than some of the commonly kept Halichoeres, but not nearly as large as checkboards. The ones I have seen were also pretty peaceful.

Thanks so much for the input. I'm feeling pretty lucky this fish is really neat. I may like it as much or more than earmuff wrasse which were my previous favorite halichoeres.

Why wouldn't they collect a lot of these beautiful fish? 50-100 bucks is not a tall order at all and they're gorgeous!

DD has them periodically, and occasionally the others show up, but I attribute at least part of it to a lack of familiarity with the fish. If few get ordered, few get collected.

I'll keep my eyes opened for one and let you know. The one 3ford got is more 'terminal' than the ones I usually see, but that may or may not be seasonal.

DD often gets small batches of the same fish, not always wrasses but I would check tonight and Monday. A lot of times I see they don't put their best specimen up for sale first, either and I shoot myself for the impulse buy.

No warranty at your LFS and it's one more water system they've had to adjust to and where they pick up additional resistant parasites. I buy lots of fish food and other things from my LFS but rarely if ever fish anymore

His "trusted" LFS happens to have a warranty, and it would come from the same supplier that DD recieved from.

Sounds like we need more of those trusted LFS then! Wayyyyyyyy too many are undeserving of the "trusted" badge.

If I had a local LFS that I trusted and that did a great job I would use them. My only other beef is selection but if they actually ordered what I wanted as requested I wouldn't mind supporting a middle man that is deserving. Small business used to be the backbone of this country...

Speaking from experience, special ordering isn't as cut-and-dry for livestock except for the most common of things, from relationships with suppliers, how well they identify and care for things, as well as their weather, their workers religious beliefs, and their transport chain, so much can factor in. That being said, an LFS should be able to make it worthwhile to utilize them through information and hand picked specimens, unfortunately too few do.
