I came home from work today to find both my hammer & duncan tightly shut. I've had the hammer for nearly a month and the duncan for about a week. They both have looked good up until today. I'm guessing it's not a coincidence that this they are doing this at the same time. I did notice there was some unusual jetsam flying around the tank. It looks like one of my shrimp may have molted and the old shell got sucked through a powerhead. Other than this, everything else seems normal.

Alk 8.1
pH 8.1
Cal 470
Mag 1400
Nitrate 5-10
Phos .02
SG 1.026

I'm not sure what else I should be looking at?

Thanks

I don’t see a molt causing this. Molts are actually great for tanks for many reasons. I’ve seen plate corals eat them on many occasions.

Never kept a duncan before but I keep lots of euphyllia such as hammers. They just tend to be like this and I wouldn’t be concerned. I have torch and frogspawn as well that do this. If they’re closed up for a whole day, then it’s time to start looking at what’s causing it.

They are both open this morning. Probably just me overreacting. I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but since I had 2 different LPS species behaving the same, thought there might be something going on. I'll just keep an eye on them for now. Thank you for the response.

I tend to think the same way sometimes. Like if one coral closes up in the middle of lights on time. I keep checking on it thinking it’s leaving me. Come back later and it’s open and happy.

Ugghh.. so they are closed again. The parameters I posted were from a week ago (right before the duncan was added), so I retested today. The only thing that has a measurable change is my nitrates, which have fallen below 5 ppm. It makes sense as the Chaeto in my fuge has recently started to really take off. Could the Nitrate drop be p'ing them off?
