Hammer Coral seems weird?

Hi so basically I got a new hammer coral yesterday and it’s opened up but seems stretched or something. Was just wondering if this is normal or what it may be a sign of. Thanks!

Could be that the light in your tank is lower than it was used to in the prior location. What PAR are you running in that location?

I only got the coral two days ago and this is the first spot I have put it. I’m not sure what par the light has in that area.

It was a large tank with I believe a few Ai hydras.

Some other people on other forums are saying it seems the coral is reaching for more light. I am just using a normal light with blue setting.

Do you know which light you are using? We might be able to offer some assistance with re-programming it to what you need. : )

It’s just a basic freshwater light with the blue colour on. It ya no adjustment or programming.

Sorry, but that light is not going to work. You need a much stronger light that is made for growing coral.

Sorry, friend. I would recommend doing some research on coral and appropriate lighting. I think it is safe to say that you will need to find a new light or return that guy to the store soon or it is going to die.

That’s what I thought, I bought the coral pretty much knowing the light wouldn’t be powerful enough. Just thought I’d try it because I’ve had corals so ok under it before. What are some good budget lights you’d recommend for this tank? (5.5g)

I personally run several AquaIllumination Prime lights on my aquariums; you can probably find a used original Prime here on the marketplace for around $100 or so. It's definitely one of the more affordable yet high quality lights on the market.

Thats what I was thinking. I can get a Ai prime for about $130cad used or I was thinking I can get a kessil a80 tuna blue

For a 5 gallon aquarium with softies and lps I think the kessil a80 would be fine. The AI prime would probably be the better option though.

The kessil a80 and the coralife led have similar power (15 watts and around 30-40 par) but that is not the only consideration. Kessil doesn’t publish their par ratings, and they claim that the lights spectrum is more important. That’s debatable, but what’s not is the many testimonials of reef keepers who have used kessil with great success. I’m one of them. Had an a80 over my biocube 29 for several months and kept palythoas and a hammercoral alive and happy. They were even happier when I upgraded to a kessil a160we. That being said I don’t know much about the spectrum of the coralife led. But I have never once heard of someone using one to keep coral. Not saying it can’t, just have never heard mention of it’s success or failures.

Kessil a80 Tuna Blue PAR

Hey everyone, After reading over some old forum posts, I found that a few people claim that you get the highest PAR readings out of Kessil a360 and a160 models at 60% color and 100% intensity. Does anyone know if this is true for the a80 as well? Thanks!
