Hey Guys,

I have a branching hammer that has gone from about two heads to about twenty and I want to trim it down. The issue is, the white skirt on the coral is very long and I don't know if I can cut into it safely. As anyone done this before?

It goes almost to the base of the colony, attaching multiple branches/heads together before it reaches the stony skeleton at the base. See the picture below.

Thanks!

Thanks for the videos! It looks like in the first video the coral had a longer white skirt like mine do, however in the second video they said to cut an inch under the flesh....

It's just odd to me how long the flesh or skirt is on mine. I have had torches in the past grow with small skirts, much like what is shown in the second video, but never had anything grow this far out without the flesh following and hard skeleton developing.

Anyone frag on the white skirt like mine has before? I am considering trying on one to see how it heals but am worried about losing the mother colony if it goes bad.

(side note: I only have bone cutters, no dremel saw)

I think the 2 inches mentioned is because when the polyps recede they occupy some of the skeleton, found that out trying to frag a small polyp off of my frogspawn....

I promised my buddy a branch of my hammer 4 months ago and I now have 8 heads with the skirt at the base still like yours.... curious how this goes.

If you dont have tiles already, a guy I got my Frogspawn from epoxied them to tiles and its really cool to have a solid base randomly in the sand.

Absolutely, getting a cheap dremel now too.

How long did it take to grow 20 heads?

The white in your pic isn't the flesh part of the coral, it's just fresh new skeleton that hasn't turned brown from exposure yet. You can cut it anywhere you wan't, just keep about 2 to 3 inches or so down from the top of the head. I've fragged my hammer and frogspawn many times over the years.

Awesome! I've been hoping this was the case. I'll prob pick up a cheap dremel on amazon when I have time and start fragging it here and there then! Thanks for the info.

If your nervous about cutting flesh rubberband off the heads ypu want to frag off and then toss back in the tank. In a couple days the flesh under the rubberband will have receeded back giving you a clean skeleton to frag.

Cool tip! I'll give that a shot!
