Hey guys,

I recently purchased a nice hammer coral for a fantastic price from my local lfs. Long story short, it’s a lot happier (and bigger) in my DT than it ever was there, and I’m having coral warfare/placement issues with it.

Is there any risk if it ends up fairly close to a maxi-mini anemone? That is, risk to either of them?

I think the anemone might irritate the hammer coral if it gets real close, but it should be something you can monitor over time. I would move one them if you notice the hammer staying closed up on the side touching the anemone.

Ok. Unless the anemone goes for a walk, that shouldn’t happen. I’ve got 4-5 inches between them, it’s just that this hammer has already proved it’s sweepers can go beyond 4 inches.

Even if you don't think the anemone is bothering him maybe persuade the anemone to go for a walk and see if the hammer opens up anymore than he already is. Maybe? If it's something you're truly worried about it may be a good idea to give them some more space, providing the anemone cooperates.

Appreciate the suggestion, though I’m not sure the hammer could open up any more than it is, it’s already double the size as it was at the lfs. I’m mostly trying to be sure I find a good permanent place for it. I thought I had, giving it 4 inches from some gsp and 6 inches from a lobo.

Well as it opened up even more, it ended up 2 inches from the gsp and 4 from the lobo. The gsp wouldn’t open and it flayed about 1/4 of the lobo off its skeleton overnight.

I’d be mad... but this hammer is impressive (at least for me)

If thats just "impressive" you must have one heck of a collection! That thing is awesome. I am new to euphyllia but I've never seen my hammer deploy sweepers - maybe I just got a lazy one? lol

I wish. Its by far the best piece I have. Everything else is either still adjusting or frags, though my ultra acan frag is doing very well.

I’ve never seen the sweepers, but I’ve seen the resulting destruction. And the gsp opened right back up about a day after the hammer was moved.

My acan (safely on the other side of the tank:

my 90 gal I just setup and my 12 gal AIO frag tank. My hammers torches and duncans are practically snuggling!

Love it! I’m going to have to look into what can get close to my hammer, as eventually I don’t want big barren spots across my tank.

I’m running a sort of low tech/budget 54 corner. Thankfully I love lps and softies. Though I did get talked into trying out a small monti frag... lol

Bro you couldn't pay me to take an SPS frag. Too much pressure!

That’s what I thought, until it happened... lol

I’ve got a really good relationship with my lfs though. He’ll trade it back if I can’t keep it healthy. I think he’s just challenging me to expand my options (and sell me expensive sps in the future...)

That's his job! props to him on that. Let me know if you ever want to trade in the future :)

Will do. I’ve gotta get some grow out first. I’m hoping my ultra acan can be fragged in the future. It’s got some insane colors and would be fun to share and spread.

I could probably frag my gsp now, but I doubt anyone else loves that weed as much as I do...
