So it looks like it has been splitting for a week or two. Now the tentacles are disappearing. Is this normal?

No, the head is in serious trouble. Likely won't make it. Perhaps got stung by nearby coral ?

Thanks. There are not any corals within 6-8 inches. So idk what hapoened
Check your parameters. I was slacking on WC and my hammer looked a little like this. So I did small WCs and it's looked better. Doing another one today of 10%

at some point you have to decide if its dead or not. If you think its infection you should cut that head off completely before it infects the rest of the heads.
You can cut it off still showing life as well and just place it elsewhere in the tank and see if it recovers. If it does then you would have 2.

That's a wall hammer . Don't cut anything,

If you can place under lower flow and try to feed it small foods frozen if possible . It can survive .

Or if so keep it where it is and shoot for the best.

At this point if it's the If it's the only coral acting up don't try to dip it at this point in stage of the death.

How long have you had this piece.? Any before pictures? Tht can help if you got it with a little bit of death on it . It could have spread.

It's not a wall. It is branching. It has been very healthy for 6 months since I got it. Here is a full picture.

Here is a pic when it started splitting.
