We've had it for about 6 months and he's not done this before. Could he be getting ready to split? He also has new little arms at the base.

It's mouth and surrounding area was pooched up the last few days. Doing research says it's the start of splitting/branching. Hopefully that's correct.Not sure usually when they split a bubble forms over the mouth then they split but I’d wait for some more knowledgeable
