Saw some discussion here somewhere on using hamster balls for chaeto in a refugium. Will a 5" mouse ball be large enough? Not sure my refugium is big enough for a hamster ball. Is chaeto really worth it? Does it help?

Cheato provides a place for pods to reproduce and offers some nutrient export. A lot of people use them so they can support a mandarin’s diet or as a second display tank for a ‘sump monster’ like an angler, frogfish, or fish-eating brittlestar. You don’t need a refugium for a standard reef tank, but I think that they’re really cool and a great addition to your tank! Plus they’re a great way to have a species-only pico/nano tank without setting up a second system.

Chaeto has lots of benefits... it exports nitrates and phosphates. I use it in my tank refugium specifically for that benefit.

This article sums it up pretty well:
